UK-SOUTH AFRICA ROUTE??

HI!THERE
My friend and I are heading to South Africa from the U.K soon in 4X4!!
But we are wondering which routes will be the
more suitable, safe and easier to follow?
1)Morocco and then the east route through
Mauritania,mali etc......
Or 2)Down the west coast of Africa?
I need your help guys!!!!
Thanks very much

What ever route you choose, you should try to avoid some of the (potential) hotspots.
Sudan/Darfur, Congo, DRC, Ivory Coast and perhaps Togo.

Good luck!

I agree with Dizzie. I have been in South Sudan, DRC (Bukavo), Kenya, Somalia, and Zimbabwe over the past 3 months - all for professional reasons.

Don't even think about South Sudan or Somalia. DRC has very serious security problems, especially towards the east. Zimbabwe is even getting to be a bit of a concern, as the economy heads downhill, folks there are starting to hurt, and theft and robbery - especially at night - is rising. Zim is still OK during the day, but there are a lot of people with empty bellies there, and that is never good for security.

The Bas-Congo in DRC is reasonably safe (West of Kinchassa). As long as you stay on the the main tourist road in Congo Brazza you should be safe (heading straight for pointe-noir). Avoid the pool region (west of Braza). I wouldn't be to worried about Togo yet, but keep an eye on the situation.

Hi, We are heading to UK from RSA and are taking a rather diferent route Via East Africa, Djibouti, Yemen, Oman, UAE, Iran, Turkey ecc. Currently in Oman. Crossing the Red sea no problem with bike, will also be possable with 4X4, You'll have to load your car with a Crane, expensive, but no problems.

I agree that West DRC seems okay. When we were there last year we had no problems. We avoided Kinshasa/Brazza and went down through Matadi to cross the river.

West coast was great. There are at least 2 other groups heading down that way this year.

cheers

Graham is right ! the west route is a wonderfull route, espiecially if you speak french or you like Africa with the french touch !
We were one of the others groups. If you don't want to go Matadi to cross the river and wait for the second angolan visa, you can fly with the car from Cabinda to Luanda !

You can have information, in french, on our website www.kapsud.net
