Turkey and Iran

Hi Guys

We are planning a trip from Europe to Laos through the pamir highway and China. We are heading through Iran. Does anyone know if it is safe traveling this close to the Iraq border?

Options are to avoid Iran completely and get a ferry over the caspian see.

Any experiences?

Thanks

Should be fine, there is many people taking this route ;)

You do realise the scale on that map? You aren't really going that close to Iraq (or Syria) for that matter....

Iraq shouldn't pose any threat at all on that route.

That area around Tabriz is very nice by the way.
Which software did you use to create that map?

Thanks for the headsup, can sleep better now.
We use Furkot.com. Very cool. You give your paremeters and it works out where to fuel up, eat and sleep.
Based on google maps though.

Thanks for the link, didn't realise that website existed. Very useful.
I hope you can edit range per tank etc, will have a good play with it this afternoon.

Happy planning.

yeah you can. Takes a while to learn. You can edit your general trip pref and also those daily. So how many breaks, departure and arrival times. I think tank size/km range is a general setting per trip.

Close to Iraq ?

Do you have any imagination how far is your closest point to Iraq ?
Just wondered !

Or better to ask how close is really close and can be dangereous ?

:oops2:
:rolleyes2:

Change money in Iran (approx 38.000 for 1 euro, 34000 for 1 dollar, at least 6 weeks ago)
Otherwise there were no problems when I was there, just a lot of army on the streets in turkey.
Good luck

Hi, I have safely crossed from Iran into Turkey at Bazargan/Dogubayazet border on 13 Nov 15. The border except for long trucks on both sides awaiting checks looked fairly quiet (maybe Friday prayer) as I observed not many people going thro the immigration check points. Me and 3 other my team members were the only bikers. The gates on both sides remaibed closed and locke all time except when there is cleared passengers to cross. I assessed the environment at this border as 'cool and unfriendly'. However we got cleared in about 3 hours.
My advise to anyone using this crossing, get all your document in order and you should get thro either side easy. If you want to hire someone to guide you to check and clear your document there are lots of them , you have to pay for their service (heard they asked for up to Euro 20.
On both sides no security escort, you just ride on. I found that ln both sides i.e towards Tabriz and Doghbayazet from the border, the scenary is so beautiful and lots of pics to take.
Safe ride.
