Travelling with Dogs

Hi All, my wife and i will be departing next year for a one year trip from Durban, South Africa to London. we will be travelling in a Landrover Forward Control Camper. we have 2 Jack Russels, can anyone advise if it is possible to take them with? any advice from travellers who have travelled with pets will be appreciated.

I have been looking at this for some time
now as I want to travel with my chinese crested.
I have seen loads of reports from travellers meeting people with dogs around africa so yes it is very possible.
Rules can vary country to country, but your pet passport is the best bet for trouble free travelling.

Lorraine Chittock think shes still in S.America at mo, but lorraine has given alot of advice on here in the past. Im pretty sure she started in Africa too.

Smellybiker's Wanderlust Worldmap • Index page is another guy with links to doggy travelling on his site[on the left hand side] I think he travelled with lorraine for a while.

I think the pet passport thing can take several months to get in the UK so start looking into it a while before you go, you guys also have the same thing as far as I am aware.

Check the DEFRA website then write to them. The PETS scheme is limited to Rabies free countries on their list. Arrive via West Africa in a UK port and your Dog probably gets to half starve in some hell hole government rabies quarantine kennels for 6 months while you pay prices that'd embarass Paris Hilton for the pleasure. And, don't believe anything DEFRA and the likes won't put in writing with a real signature. The drones in their call centre probably confuse Morocco with Monaco and won't imagine any way to get a dog from Cape Town to London that doesn't involve a Boeing, no matter how many times you say Overland. Get it wrong and the best thing that will happen is a trip on the next boat back to France.

Hope you can do it, but I suspect you can't.

Plenty of trips with dogs...

Easy enough doing an overland trip with dogs. Get a pet passport, with a photo, and jobs done.

The europeans are active dog overlanders - look through the overland websites.

We met a guy cycling with his staffie (who sat on a trailer). Plus, others who had a mix of hounds...

Enjoy... the dogs certainly will.

ps - even met a couple who had a 10-year old cat!
