Travel Advice: Tunisia

Ssup Lads

We are organising a 12 day trip to Tunisia in September, arriving in Tunis through a ferry from mainland Europe.

Our trip will be a loop down through Mahdia, Sfax, Matmata, Douiret, Ksar Ghilan to Douz, Tozeur and then heading north back to the capital. We were initially planning to pass through the Chambi area close to Kasserine, but that has enough red written all over it for us to already take it out of our itenerary :)

Now, like anyone who has travelled in different regions knows how exaggerated government travel advices are sometimes.

Does anyone or is there anyone there at the moment, who really knows how it is right now?

Any input would be greatly appreciated as we have already bought the ferry tickets and will be paying for some accommodation aswel.

Cheers Guys,

Ride Safe,

Chris

You can go around Kasserine, just don't stop. This region is indeed a bit hot. You can visit the roman ruins in Sbeitla though. And don't forget the Pista Rommel in Redeyef. And go to El Jem to visit probably the best preserved coliseum in the world. Did I mention Kairouan for its oldest mosque in North Africa (year 670) or La Ghriba on the Isle of Djerba, Africa's oldest Synagogue built in the 5th century BEFORE JC.

There's a small Berbère "museum" in Tamezret, a small town south of Matmata, well worth visiting if you are interested in the Berbere civilization, well before the Arab invasion.

In Douz, camp downtown at Camping Desert Club. Walking distance from restaurants.

Then ride across the dunes to Ksar Ghilane, and camp there for free in the dunes.

Rr get there thru the paved road. From Ksar Ghilane, head East toward Tataouine

Cheers bro, this is valuable info :) Just one thing to clear though; when were you there? As there has been some recent turmoil and I would love to have knowledge on the current situation!
