Tchad/Sudan Border is CLOSED

As of three weeks ago the Border between Tchad and Sudan is closed for all overland travel until the end of the year, when the situation will be re-evaluated by the Sudan Government.

We are in NDjamena, Tchad and have been trying to get a visa for the last two weeks. We had confirmation from Khartoum today of the above. Visas for air travel are still available.

Please can someone reading this post it to any other websites to inform other travellers before they get to Tchad.

is this for all the borders between those country's ? And why they close ? And what if you have a visa, because at certain embassy's they give visa for Sudan straight away within hours time...

Just currious.

Just the Tchad/Sudan border is closed. Visas are issued as they expect air travel, ask Embassies about overland travel.

There is fighting in Western Sudan.

Does this mean that there's no route from europe to south africe except through Egypt? Is there any way to get from West Africa to South Africa overland?

Werner 22 Jul 2003 07:02

Hi benoij,
There is, indeed, a way to get to SA via the west coast. I went this way in 2000: Morocco, Mauritania, Mali,Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo (Brazzaville), Angola, Namibia, SA. No big problems. Perhaps you would like to buy my book about this trip listed on this website, "Books", entitled "Africa Against the Clock on a Motorcycle."

Werner, as you know, situations in Africa change every day, you are talking about the year 2000 what means in Africa you talk about centuries ago....

Nice you want to sell you book, but i am affraid your routeinfo would be a bit out of date.

Cheers Derek-Jan

All

There is indeed and alternative going through Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, DCR, Angola to Namibia. This route was just achieved in May - June 2003 by Bokwa - 2 South african guys. Check out the info and GPS coordinates at www.geocities.com/bokwa

Hi, we are going up from S-Africa to Europe, and are in Malawi now. It looks like you have to go through Egypt (if you don't want to ship). This means from Ethiopia to Sudan.
Is that possible now????
And after that, is it possible to get a visum for Libya (two bikers)? Any recent experiences?

Cheers,
Marianne

Hi,

As far as i know the Sudan/Egypt border is only open for nationals of those 2 country's.

Regards Derek-Jan

[Yes the route now is only through Egypt.

However, it is possible to go through Gabon, Congo and Angola. Not sure how safe though. Check www.geocities.com/bokwa, two South Africans did it fairly recently - probably May.

I think the Ethiopia/Sudan border is ok, but cant be sure. It is very difficult to get vehicles into Egypt, Carnet de passage problems. Check this site, someones vehicle was impounded on Egypt border - big hassles and expensive, be careful. Also ferry from Wadi Halfa (freight) meant to be expensive and a hassle and runs about once a month. With bikes you could probably get onto a passenger one, I think they run twice a week.

Libya visa we dont know whether it is possible to get.
