Sudan

I traveled through Sudan in 2000 from Ethopia to Egypt. I am american. Everyone had problems with the Sudan visa but usually after 2 weeks they knew weather they were going from the Sud Embassy in Ethopia. Sudan is a mystery. Sometimes yes. sometimes no. At the border they said I was the first american they hads scene in over 10 years crossing the boarder and bought me a coke. Very very nice people.

One more commet. The sudan embassy in Egypt required everyone to have a return ticket to get a visa even if you are driving. Tourist would buy the air ticket and return it after showing the sudanese embassy. The visa's worked just fine. THe sudan embassy in Ethiopia did not require return tickets. Strange???? but that's africa!!

My visa for Sudan took four working days in Addis Ababa. They wanted to see my carnet for the bike. I travel with a Canadian passport. They also wanted a letter of support from my embassy, which the embassy would only issue after seeing an airline ticket. I bought the ticket Addis-Khartoum for US$330. They wrote the letter, and I received a full refund from Ethiopian Airlines some six months later back in Canada.

Hi, I got my visa for Sudan in Cairo in 28 hours with no air ticket, British Embassy wont issue a letter of recomendation but will give a photocopy of a letter stating why they won`t give a letter of recomendation, I found the Sudanese embassy very easy and straight forward to deal with except that I got there on Thursday morning and they said they were closed so I had to wait untill Sunday to start the process. I already had my visa for Ethiopia which I think helped and I took a couple of photo`s of the bike along and copies of the Arabic page of my driving licence and international log book ( Carte Gris)

As per ChrisK's post above - visa obtained from Sudanese Embassy in Cairo on 24th February within 28 hours, passport dropped off at 9am and picked up the following day at 2pm and paid for in local currency with a bit of wrangling, although we are doing a trip for charity and played this card fairly early on.

1. Application form from main desk
2. Complete, photocopy in triplicate from shop 100m down the road
3. Submit all four forms with four passport photographs along with letter from Embassy (or letter from embassy stating that a recommendation is not possible - UK Embassy)
4. Return following day, pay and pick up passport with no expense spared hologram visa and leave wearing winning smile.
