South America documentation

Hi
After riding from Adelaide to London two years ago i am about to ship bike to La Guaira in Venezuela to ride the Guyana's and into Brazil. I will eventually ride down into Argentina and up through all countries and ship into Panama and head up into the States. I have various opinions as to whether or not i need a carnet de passage. Can anyone tell me if it is currently required or not? ...about to gamble........

Where are you finding "various opinions?" No one needs one, and no one carries one in the Americas.

Thanks

Thanks markharf

For South America, all you need is:

Passport

Vehicle registration document

Internation driving licence (if you're unlucky with a bad cop)

Temporary import document (You recieve this at every border)

Yellow Fever certificate (I was asked for this a few times in Venezuela although im not sure what would of happened if I didnt have it)

Something that looks like insurance. As long as it's in English and complicated with the right numbers and stamps etc, it should convince the cops. They have no way to check it.

YOU DO NOT NEED A CARNET !!

I am on the tail end of a trip through every country in South and Central America. FWIW, I've once needed my actual title, which in my home state is separate from my registration document. I've once needed an international driver's permit, and never needed my yellow fever card. I carry all, since you never know.

Had similar experience to Markharf...

Carried Ownership/Vehicle Registration Doc (same in Canada), plus numerous colour copies...needed original at EVERY border, and had to part with copies at many..

Carried Int'l Drivers License...needed it for Argentina/Chile crossings...

Carried Passport...needed everywhere, duh!

Carried Yellow Fever card...never required.

Suerte!

Hi,

Apparently, Canadians, Americans and Australians need a Visa to enter Brazil.

Are you guys that are posting not going to Brazil or do know something thats eluding the rest of us?

Mark

That is true.... You can get them in Iguazu (Argentina) at the border. Only takes a form and a couple of hours.

That was the case in 2008 with the yankies I was with at the time.

I didn't notice anyone asking about visas. Americans need visas for Suriname, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, plus maybe someplace else I've forgotten. Other nationals need other visas--more, less, the same number. But the OP asked about a carnet.
