Safety in Morocco
I was planning to travel through Morocco this year in a 4x4, getting away from towns where possible. Maybe travelling with one other if anyone has the time to go! Firstly, would it be safe with only 1 vehicle? Secondly, given the current situation in other N African countries, any views on whether i should be thinking of going somewhere else this year. doesn't seem to be any talk of trouble spreading at the moment, but someone who's there or has been there recently may have a more informed view.

Morocco is generally safer than Europe or North America. You can have a great adventure on some of the more remote roads.
Lonely Planet has a thread going discussing the (unlikely) chance of trouble spreading. Yes there's unemployment, however food prices are low, the King is generally respected and I think people recognise the government is doing an OK job given the circumstances. |
I went in September as a solo vehicle....YouTube - To The Sahara Overland 4x4 Morocco
Take sensible security precautions by keeping attractive items out of site. Don't open a wallet bulging with notes in front of people, as the temptation for some individuals might be too great. We felt re-assured by the number of police check points that we had to drive through. There are campsites every where which are cheap and secure. These may be a better option for a solo vehicle. But do wild camp at least one night in the desert under the stars. Even if things kicked off in Morocco, I don't think it would effect the east of the country where most travellers want to go. However, you need fuel, and the supply to garages could become disrupted. It is a fantastic place, and the people are wonderful....Just go. |
Thanks for that link Tim

Looks like you had a fantastic time - can't wait. Is it generally safe for women travelling alone (other than the nuisance factor, which i'm used to having lived in the middle east a couple of years back)? I will be travelling with a roof tent so intend to camp, but could always sleep in the car if at times not at an organised camp site.

Single female travelling alone..then I would use campsites etc for peace of mind...as you would in any country.
You will already know the dress code. |
yes, thanks for that Maximus. Just a thought, as i'd love to be sitting somewhere remote alone just gazing at the elements. But, let's face it, that's probably no different from anywhere in the world. There's an adventure and then there's crass stupidity. I'm sure I err on the right side of that line!

Planning to head to Morocco in April May probably also as a single vehicle - Landrover. However there are a few people seem to be heading in that general direction around that time so perhaps you could hook with some of the others on this site . I,m just watching what materialises before a definative plan but will be there for about 6 weeks. Check out Travellers seeking travellers. Like you though hoping that politically it doesn,t go sour before then- but there is no reason for that to happen so I,m sure it will be fine.
