Safety in Kurdish part of Turkey

Anyone crossed this region lately and can report on the safety situation?
General advice seems to be to stay on the main routes but I'd prefer to use smaller roads.
Not getting too close to the Syrian border is obvious. I guess staying north of Diyarbakir should be OK.
Any input appreciated.

I crossed it in August last year...
No problem back then, biggest issue maybe is some kids throwing rocks at you. I've seen some PKK guys down there but they where not interested in bikers.
Give it a go and ask the folks on the road. If they think you should't go there just don't risk it. Ask some Hotel Manager in Cappadoccia or somewhere NE like Kars.
