Riots spreading in South Africa

Anybody planning to visit South Africa should check the current news regarding the widespread unrests following the detainment of former President Jacob Zuma. Check here: https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica

The main regions where massive riots occur are in Durban plus surroundings and in Johannesburg. Major roads connecting Durban and Gauteng have been blocked, cars and trucks have been torched. Large parts of the province of KwaZulu Natal are no-go areas, as Zuma and his supporters are Zulus, the main tribe in KZN.

Fortunately the Durban / Johannesburg area`s arent the maintargets for south african overlanders. Guess also not for general tourism.

One of the popular routes amongst travellers and tourists is the Garden Route and the Wild Coast along the former Transkei. KwaZulu Natal (KZN) is popular, comprising the well known Sani Pass, the lush coastal regions, the game Reserves. Furtheron travellers going north pass through the province of Mpumalanga to visit the Kruger game reserve before crossing to Mozambique or Zimbabwe.

The whole province of KZN is alight. Main and secondary roads have been blocked with torched trucks and cars. Shops, even in smaller settlements have been looted and set alight. The infrastructure is severely damaged.

The Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape municipality (Garden Route, Wild Coast) has asked for troops of the SANDF to support the local police, because unrest is spreading to the neigboring provinces.

Finally, Gauteng province isn't just Johannesburg.

Only the western parts of South Africa (Northern and Western Cape, Freestate) are still safe to travel.

According to the latest news from South Africa the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) has deployed soldiers to assist the local police. This seems to have subdued the riots and looting in the larger towns. Unrests are still in parts of KZN in more rural areas.

But the supplies of all goods is still problematic. The refineries in Durban, accounting for nearly 40% of the fuel supplies are still closed down.

Safe travels,
