I've just returned from another fun week wringing a little two-stroke's neck in northern Thailand. Rode from Mae Hong Song through Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, and along the Mekong all the way to Mukdahan and finished in Ubon Ratchathani. Fantastic place and great people. I didn't bother with many spare clothes and ate and slept in guesthouses along the way.

There were bombings in Bangkok and a few incidences in Chiang Mai but it didn't deter me. Attacks appear to be local politics and directed at locals not tourists. While that still sucks, it means foreigners aren't targetted. The most dangerous aspect of the trip (aside from the doped-up bus drivers) is camping along the Mekong River away from major towns. There is still a lot of smuggling and trafficking along this border and you are better off staying in a guest house in town.

enjoy (for mine) the world's most fabulous riding country
cheers, Brett

I agree with Brett. I've spent 3 out of the last 6 months in Thailand riding round, mainly in the north. Once you get used to the traffic and local driving/riding styles it's all good. Check out the gt-rider website for more info.

i'm not sure why north thailand would be any more dangerous than the rest of it. in fact the South is where all the troubles are.

Drove round Mae Hong Son / Pai area in a rented 4x4 last year and had no worries apart from some real windy roads and the odd lunatic driver. Might is right on the roads there so you might get some c??p as a biker but I would love to do it myself :)
