Nicaragua-safety and travel
 

Hello people,
looking at doing a trip to Nicaragua next April. Anyone with recent experience there? We are both experienced riders, have ridden through CR, Nepal, India, Cambodia etc. Looking for current information on safety, areas to avoid, best place to rent bikes etc.

We were in Nicaragua last November on our own bikes so can’t recommend hire I’m afraid. Stayed in Leon, and Granada which were really nice and very safe. Went to see Mesaya volcano which was great. We were advised to avoid Managua, which we did.
We stayed on Ometepe island which was really nice - we stayed on the smaller volcano in a remote cabin which we really enjoyed. We also stayed in San Juan del Sur which was a little bit commercial but nice nevertheless.

At no time did we feel unsafe but we took normal precautions as tourists.

We really enjoyed Nicaragua and would definitely go back given the chance.
