Motorbike insurance in Asia

Hi there.
I'm planing a trip through Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgystan, China, Pakistan and India, leaving spring 2004 from Europe. I've heard that you are supposed to be able to get insurance for the bike at the borders of the countries you visit upon entering (according to auto-club TCS in Switzerland). Does anybody know anything about this? Costs? What kind of insurance etc?

Havent been through all of them but the turkey, iran, pak, india ones didnt offer me any insurance and didnt ask to see mine, which i didnt have anyway... even if they did offer it, i would be highly sceptical that the money you paid over would be registered anywhere legitimitly, or even if it was, i doubt making a claim on the insurance would be at all posible anywhere bar maybe in turkey.

most people go uninsured...

best of luck with the trip

All right,
thanks! I guess I'll just crash by myself, avoiding any third party injuries, plus avoid having the bike stolen!

Hi,

Don't worrie about crashing into anyone... Totaling a car would cost you maybe $ 100 and a few bumps cost no more then a cup of thee and a photo.

Don't know about China however... they seem to love money and permit's... lot's of permit's :-(

Safe travels

I travelled from Uzbekistan to Italy overland with my motorcycle in august and september 2003.
Nobody asked me the insurance in Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. In Turkmenistan they sell it at the border and it's mandatory (but it costs few dollars).
No problem in Turkey and Greece as my italian "green card" cover both these countries.
