Kinlet to Khasan

Hello folks,

In 2018 I did a solo motorcycle ride from my home here in Shropshire to Nordkapp, in the hottest Scandinavian summer recorded, and raised over £10,000 for my chosen charity.

In 2020 I am looking at doing another solo riding challenge but this time to Eastern Russia along the Trans Siberian Highway. Some of you I know will have already done this trip so I am looking for firm advice, the good, the bad and the ugly. (Mossies I am already aware of BTW) I am looking at riding mid summer.

Any comments/advice would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Mervyn

You won't legally get to Khasan without a border permit. I applied for one in 2017 in Vladivostok and was told that independent travel there is forbidden. So if you want to get to Khasan legally, start looking for a travel agent.

If you want to make a tour of it, Russia is filled with magnificent scenery, especially in the republics of Altai, Tuva, Khakassia and around Lake Baikal.

If you're just going for the destination, you have a long, long asphalt road with nothing much to see apart from a brief glimpse of Baikal at its least attractive point. Ending the trip in Magadan would at least give you some non-asphalt road and spectacular scenery.

Thank you EO especially the details regarding Khasan. I will now do a bit more research on this situation. For reasons too long to go into here if I can get there it would be important for this particular trip and who I would be riding for. A tour around Baikal would be a must I think. Thanks again

If you're planning to go off the main route a little, perhaps you would be interested in the write-up of my 2017 trip across Russia. I started in Kaliningrad, drove to Vladivostok and then on to Magadan, starting in August and finishing in October. It's in three illustrated parts:

Kaliningrad to Novokuznetsk (European Russia, Urals, Western Siberia):

Novokuznetsk to Nerchinsk (mountains of southern Siberia, eastern Siberia):

Nerchinsk to Magadan (Russian Far East, Kolyma Highway)

Maybe this can give you some ideas. There are plenty more write-ups of trips to just about every part of Russia on the website.

Let me know if you have specific questions,

EO
