Iran, entry with more than 250cc problem

If someone can help Pavlin from Motorcycle Adventures this is his question.

Motorcycle Adventures 1 hour ago

“I have one very serious question and I hope that someone will be able to answer it!
The situation in Iran is changed in last week. After 2nd Aug and any motorcycles, bigger than 250cc, are not allowed to ride in the country. I just been informed from Bulgarian (CBA) and German (ADAC) automobile clubs that they have received official letter from Iran. This law actually is from 2005, but until now they never been strict and as you know many riders already visited the country. Now, for fist time they receive an official latter to inform them.

The forbidden vehicles are:Any motorcycle above 250cc also any American brands, regardless the engine size. Any car above 2,500cc also any American brands, regardless the engine size. Any car with golden folio on it.Any car with price more than 40,000 Dollars.

Last week a Bulgarian family was not allowed to go in, because they drove Chrysler. So, there is a huge risk to ride more than 6,000km to Iranian border and then not allowed to go in.

If anyone have more information about it, please let me know asap! I need serious info, not " I think that you will be ok..." As I said I have more than 6,000km to get there and an option (You might be able) is not an option for me.

Thank you in advance!”

These rules have been in place for a long time for permanent imports into Iran. Are you 100% sure this now covers vehicles brought in for temporary import?

Remember that by banning vehicles with engines bigger than 2500 cc they are banning all lorries from entering the country. Sounds very unlikely to me.

It's the season however, so I expect we'll quickly hear reports if they really are enforcing these rules. Might want to post on the forums 'Overland Sphere' and 'Overlanding Asia' on Facebook for more and quicker responses.

WE talking about all vehicles coming to Iran as a visitor, not to import it.

Yes, I read the original post.

This most certainly is not the first time people have posted 'new rules' like this regarding engine size restrictions.

This would basically stop just about all overland travellers from entering the country, so I'm sure we'll hear about it (or not) soon.

I'm not about to cancel my trip in my 2,693 cc car later this year though.

Fingers crossed

Here's a post from one of the Facebook forums regarding this matter:

Still no reports of people having problems.

OK, so there are a few reports now of people entering Iran very recently with bikes over 250 cc, and no reports of anyone being denied entry.

There's a good thread here:

Hello,

I am new to the forum and I am from Turkey.
My two friends made the route to Georgia , Azerbaijan, Iran and back to Turkey recently. They were driving a Honda nC750x and a CRF250. They did not have any problem travelling in Iran with the motorcycles. But the only problem they had was during the entrance to Iran. The officers in Iran entrance warned them about their route. The officer told them that they can only stay for 48 hours and they can only ride to west because Turkey is west of Iran. Otherwise if they are caught they have to pay 100$ fee/day.

When they entered Iran they talked to some locals about the restriction of the 48 hrs rule but the locals told them that the police tell this to frighten the visitors. They eventually stayed 4 days and went to Tehran, Isfahan and back to Turkey.

While exiting from Iran noone asked them why they stayed 4 days or charged them anything.

Besides no one asked them or stopped them because they are driving big engine motorcyles.

I hope tha tinformation will help.

has anyone entered with Ford Camper to Iran recently?

We are planing to visit iran sometime this year with our Ford Camper.

I read on German ADAC that its forbidden to enter Iran with american car, but i also read that its forbidden for motorbikes bigger than 250cc to enter and people still report that they enter without problems.

Has anyone went to Iran with american car?

are there any news on this subject or hopes for lifting the ban?

our plan is to travel to India or all the way to Cambodia if possible. Alternative routes are even more difficult so its very important for us to find a solution.

All help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

April 2019

I already have knowledge of people who could not enter the country with a motorcycle of 800 cc

Tomkat 24 Apr 2019 11:42

There have been several posts on Facebook recently of people who were denied entry to Iran on bikes over 250. Regardless of what people "think" the law "should" apply to, it is evident that the border guards have now been told what it "will" apply to. Give it a try by all means but don't pin your hopes on being the exception to the rule, particularly if you're running out of time on a visa and may have to reroute or retrace your steps.

jackkkkk 30 Apr 2019 00:26

Yep — Over the last few weeks, multiple people have reported that they've been turned away at the border for having a motorbike over 250cc. The long-standing law is finally being enforced.

Looks like Iran is off the cards for now

There's some vague reports that it might be possible to transport the bike via truck, and some talk of a 5-8 day transit visa, but it's all a bit unclear right now.
