EPIRB registration in Europe (Italy)

We have a friend living in Europe who wants to buy and register an EPIRB in Italy. Has anyone done this before, registering the EPIRB in Italy or Europe for an overland trip.

We bought the GME MT410G in Oz and registered it there because thats where we were living at the time, but can't seem to find too much for Europe.

Thanks

Normally those details are provided with the EPIRB .. so when your friend buys the EPIRB the instructions on registering it will be with it. Check at the sale point.

EPIRB alternatives

Why an EPIRB? There are plenty of other alternatives, either a satphone (Thuraya would be my choice for Africa or Asia) Or a SPOT - www.findme.spot.com which does a lot more (Tracking on e-mail and Google Earth is really good) and is pretty cheap for what it does.

You may be heading for places where it doesn't work, but N africa coverage was very good - we used one for a trip to the Gilf and it worked very well, and the tracking means that it's still useful when you aren't having an emergency!

Check the rules carefully, before buying.
In Denmark you MUST have a VHF radio license and the exam, license number and epirb registration will cost you 150pounds and that is without VHF course and the epirb. And you must send it to a dealer that will program your license number into it.

I bought mine in on the internet from UK and there were papers with it, that just needed to be filled out and I could have registered in UK, even if I'm living in Denmark.

I also got in contact with a danish yachtsman, who bought a US epirb and registered it with its serial number on the US authorities(NOOA) website.
