Dogs in morocco grrrrrrr !!

I have been to morocco many times , and must warn you about the amount of stray dogs on the road side . There numbers have increased a lot over the years and they tend to run at you >
and .......... i was in a forest a few years ago and a pack of about 20 /30 Dogs chased me in the snow !
So give them a wide berth :Beach:

Hello

Just back from marocco.
First impression was, wow no dogs!
Just one pack of 5 relaxing on a roundabout at Tinghir.
But then on the N13 between Zaida and Azrou, more dogs than goats along the road.
Never seen anything like that.
But only one barked at me. :D

The dogs are in the Atlas mountain region. They also chased me or try to jump in front of my bike. They also bark the whole night so its hard to sleep. There are no dogs at the coast.

I experienced this too (in 2011). I wonder if anyone has been bitten or if this has caused an accident - I came pretty close to one. I'm unsure of the likelihood of these animals carrying rabies but rabies innoculations are recommended for travel to Morocco. Morocco - Fit For Travel

Personally I've never had an issue with dogs in Morocco.

But you should take into account that particularly in rural areas dogs are kept as guard dogs to protect livestock and property not as pets. Hence the chasing and aggressive behaviour.

If you've spent time with locals in rural areas you'll notice as they approach a village they'll often pick up a few choice stones to throw at any overly aggressive dogs.

more dogs I have encountered in Romania, in Morocco almost none.

dogs in morocco

Think your all on the wrong roads then
The road from Azroe to Midelt is a haven for wild dogs at the side of the road, and many have been killed.
From my findings i would say they have trebbled in 10 years. :Beach:

Ti's true had two leap out of the cedres and try and eat their way thru the side of the hire car as I was passing at speed..... Not so funny on two wheels I would imagine. If u happen to b travelling that way and see a three legged dog chasing u, he can have the other one back if he contacts me via this forum :innocent:

Dogs must be hit and miss if you'll pardon the pun, as I've just returned from a six week tour from Scotland to Morocco and back, going down to Zagora and a bit beyond through the mountains, cross country and backup along the coast, saw many dogs, but didn't have the slightest response from any of them.

If a dog comes aggressively towards me on the motorcycle I tend to head straight towards them ... all of them have turned tail and run away .. I keep perusing them untill they run into their yard. :scooter: Only managed to hit a few of them .. those hit have run off .. and I have never seen them again, even on a then regular commute.

I was surprised to not see many dogs at all in Morocco this september, no packs of dogs, and only one slow dog got in my way of the bike. Had far bigger dog problems in New Zealand, Turkey and India.

After a month in morocco only a couple of half hearted dog chases somewhere west of chaouen. But travelling from afrou to midelt through the mountains lots of dog sitting patiently in the snow at the side of road .Curious , till I met a car and saw a kind couple passing food to the waiting dogs .

Interesting discussion on dogs, I had no issues in Morocco (2015) But in some areas the dogs are trained to chase motorcycles because the police ride motorcycles and they are doing something that they would rather not have the police about. First saw this in Chilao Island, Chile in 2009. They were absolutely the worst hazard I have seen riding in city streets. Would rather ride rush hour in Nairobi. So if you are seeing a lot of aggressive dogs and the police are normally on motorcycles, maybe you are in an area that would be good to get out of.
