Hey Guys

Your going really hard core on this one! I am new to long distance bike travelling, but have done a lot hiking and in cars. I have covered vertually all countries south DRC, incluidng DRC. Angola is relatively cool at this stage, however, DRC is a different story. I was there about three years ago, but a friend worked there more recently (as a commercial diver diving for diamonds) after witnessing two soldiers executing a civilian and then having to take photos of the soldiers posing with a foot on the victims head they decided to get outa there! Remember one of the 1st crimes being heard by the new International Criminal Court in the Hague is from the Congo! I am not one to discuarage something like this, and I am not doing it, just go into the situation with open eyes. You will probably be fine, however, just bear in mind this is not the East Coast, its a whole new ball game.

Please keep us up to date on these plans (I may drive up to check it out for myself again).

There's more info in the sub sahara africa section on this.

Went trough Congo-B and DRC in 2004. DRC, only from Cabinda via Matadi into Angola. This was fine and fealth comfortable there.

Congo-B was fine as long as we where on the Yaoundé to Point-Noire route. Trying to reach Braza via the Route Nationalle 1 was not such a good idea.

There're quite some travelers on that route that should be able to give more recent information.

;-)

Hey Jeff

Was reading my reply, sounds a bit more negative then I meant it! It is do-able. I was typing off the face I have some info lying around at home, I will look through it and pass it on, furthermore, I have a friend who is a pilot nad flies for the UN mostly in West Africa, I'll try to reach him and find out if he has any updates (dont know if he is around currantly) he will obviously not have much info on the roads, but the general political climate.

It is a vasinating area, my point is just that if one person didnt experience any problams, it does not mean that no one will. this is always the case, but more so in DRC.

More to follow

Wicked guys,
This is great. The unpredictability of the congo demands up to date info so Gung Ho it would be really great if you could get some recent info from your pilot mate.
Any thoughts on the wetness during may?

Gung_Ho 7 Dec 2005 19:03

Hey guys, my pilot friend is around, I'll hook up with him within the next 2 days, I am leaving for Namibia for 2 weeks on saturday (the great thing about living in South Africa!!!)so I'll post his info before then. My first trip on a bike - really excited! If any of you guys are down in Southern Africa (whenever) drop me a mail, my father use to be the cheif photographer for the South African Tourism Board and I travlled with him, so I know cool places and am always looking for something interesting to do and to meet cool people (and I figure if you are doing a bike trip in Africa you must be pretty cool). Cheers.
