Welding of aluminium and alloys in Mariinsk / Russia

Helllo together,

my rear swing arm was broken on my travel through Russia. Uff thought I must give up the journey. Fortunatly I found a workshop who could weld my problem.

I drive a TT600 with aluminium alloy rear swing arm.
You can see some fotos on http://bikershome.de/index.php/russistan/mariinsky

While Vitya was doing the welding her daughter made tee and after they gave me samogon.
Its a wonderful world.

You got lucky finding an aluminum welder. Much more difficult than to find a steel welder. Scarcity of aluminum welders is the reason why the frame of the new Africa Twin is steel, and not aluminum. If it breaks in the boon, it is easier to weld if made from steel.

Well I don't agree. I've been welding for 30yrs now and spent two years training back then, including tig and mig aluminium welding. Welding aluminium is considerably harder than welding steel. I can't see a beginner succesfully welding aluminium using any of the machines on the link list. Most of them will hardly weld anything other than garden gate thickness mild steel.

Backofbeyond's post is in response to a spammer pushing crap welders and saying it's easy to weld aluminum - so it's been deleted and the spammer nuked!

I guessed that was the case and I'm pleased it got binned but my post was just in case it didn't. I don't suppose anyone comes on here looking for tips on how to start welding but the topic has come up from time to time and the spammer's 'info' + link was just rubbish (and I had time on my hands!)

Do you think Honda really chose steel over aluminium because of the ease of repair in far off places ??

I wish you were right but I really can't see that in a design brief.

It's probably because it's far more flexible and resistant to snapping under certain loads with their design.

ALL designs are compromises:

PRICE - utility/function - FASHION - ease of manufacture NOT repair - PRICE
