I am being told your IDP is only Valid for two weeks?

Does anybody have some concereate info concerning licenses and IDP Validity in Nepal.

Currently regulations are hazy at best and the information I have found is not
consistent.

what I have found so far...

- After two weeks you are required to apply for a Nepali driving permit

- Some sources think if you take your relevant license or IDP to the police station and you can get an equivalent permit.

- But its important to note, its un-clear weather this is just the process you have to go through to validate you IDP, to start your two week allowence, or by going to the Police station it gains you essentially a full Nepali permit.

- another source said for driving more than two weeks in the countey you are required to get a full National Nepal license via a process involving verification at your local embassy and then through the transport ministry you get a license without having to take a local test in about a week.

- Finally (and wouldn't it be nice) One expat told me you only
need your home license to show you have one, which he thought was the only important law enforced at checkpoints, He said his dutch national license (not IDP) was working fine.

I’m going to ask some people in person when I get to Pokhara in a few weeks so anything I find, will post.

Absolutely! After years and years, this is still the best write-up of the process I have come across anywhere.

However, does anyone in this thread have any experience that's a little more up-to-date? I'm getting conflicting messages from around the web about whether or not it is still possible to register a bike in Nepal as a tourist.

CDP still seems possible, just not sure about the registration bit.

Can anyone help enlighten me?

A quick bump to this thread to ask if anyone has the latest information on whether it is possible for a foreigner to buy and register a bike in Nepal, I was there earlier this year and never thought to enquire at the time.

Hey Mark, in regards to your question - from what Phil detailed in his thorough post, it does seem possible for a foreigner to buy and register a bike in Nepal. Phil mentioned going through the process himself to register a Yamaha bike he purchased from Rick at Hearts & Tears. Might be worth contacting Rick directly, as Phil recommended him highly for buying a reliable bike and helping with the paperwork side of things. Alternatively, you could check in with the registration offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara to verify the process hasn't changed. Hope this helps provide a starting point
