Honda XR650L after-market exhaust - Advice?
I get the feeling I'm taking this way too seriously, but if anyone's got any opinion on the matter, I'd be keen to hear it..
I'm looking for an after-market exhaust for my XR650L, and trying to decipher; a) if any of them really make any difference b) if the more expensive ones are actually any better c) if the powerbomb type gimmicks count for anything d) if the mod has an overall positive impact, or just decreases fuel efficiency? e) if my eyes are weirding our from reading too many forums Cheers folks |

I'd probably spend money on other bits (suspension, stronger rims etc.) before I got to the exhaust pipe. Stephan |
Yoshimura semi-quiet silencer and FMF powerbomb header made the following difference to my bike. Before messing with exhausts I sorted the jetting, drilled & meshed the airbox and used a twin-air filter with filter-skins (ace). Also tried an XR400 white bros E-series silencer on the 650 - BIG mistake, almost got nicked in spain it was so loud.
Headers on the XR are terrible, very small diameter with rough welds at the head ports. Worth grinding the welds smooth even if u keep the stock pipes. Might also be worth wrapping the headers in fabric to stop re-radiation to the head. I would do that next time. You lose a massive amount of weight on an XRL by junking the stock silencer, which by coincidence is dog-ugly! http://www.lewismiller.info/photos/3...lside_ritz.jpg Hmm, can't find power curve for now, will get back to it though. |
Cheers Folks
Thanks for your help both..
POB, I'd be interested to see that power-curve if you can dig it out. As I said, I've already got a list of intended mods as long as my gangly arm, but it's all good fun eh? I think I'll go for the powerbomb header, and either the FMF powercore can, or do you know anything about the CRZ cans? I can get one from America for 90 quid all in, and it looks like it might be worth a try..? What reduction in economy should I expect with a jet kit, decent filter, and exhaust mods? Pic looks superb, where was your trip? |

The data is from the last century (1999) but so is the XR. :) Stephan |

Thanks for that Stephano, did you put all that info together yourself!?
Looks like the White Brothers is a safe bet, or certainly in terms of performance anyhoo. You don't have any ideas about ecomony do you? I guess you can't have your high performance cake, and eat the same fuel ecomonic pudding. Sorry if that makes no sense.. What are you doing with yourself in Sharjah? |
