Tour Ideas India Jan 2016
 

Hi There, unfortunately the Himalayas are out due to weather that time of year so looking for suggestions around a tour elsewhere in india.

Have 10-14 days to do a trip from Jan 02, 2015 and my wife will be in Mumbia for new years, then to Goa for a 14 day training course. I don't have to start/end there but it's a preference.

I've got on and off road experience as a dirt bike rider and have done multi-day tours around the world and I'm not afraid of a challenge. Also a keen mountain biker so mixing up the disciplines is also of interest.

The only tour that fits in my plans is this one: The TROPICAL GOA & SOUTH INDIA MOTORCYCLE TOU and have also contacted Enfield Riders to see what they have planned.

Not after luxury (39 yrs old) and ideally don't want to spend more than 5000 rupees a day (happy with alot less or a bit more if it's worth it.

Are there other suggestions/ideas or other options to see some of india by bike (rider groups etc)? Trying to get some mates to come over but I've had no luck so far.

I've been working in India (Mumbai) for the past 6 months. Although I am an enthusiastic motorcycle rider, and have toured all the Western, Central, & Eastern European countries and several African countries on my motorcycle, I don't think I would attempt motorcycle touring in India.

I say this because the 'norms & customs' of driving in India are so different from anywhere else in the world, I would be more than a little concerned for my safety. No-one follows any traffic rules at all. The only reason traffic works is because 100% of the drivers are Indian, they all grew up with the chaos and they know how it works. As for 'us foreigners', heck, it would take us less time to learn Hindi than it would take us to figure out how to drive or ride in India without getting killed.

Taxis, etc. are dirt-cheap in India. My suggestion to you is that you travel between cities by train, and when you are in cities and want to go touring, just hire a cab for the day. For 2,000 rupees (about US $35) or less, you can hire a cab for a whole day.

I disagree with this - the man says he's up for a challenge and India sure will provide that!

I came out of India after riding around for 2 months in December/January just gone. It was tough, it was frustrating and TBH I didn't enjoy it THAT much because of the chaos, but I'm glad I experienced it.

There is a weird kind of logic to the traffic and you can work it out by being persistent and observing. It's a steep learning curve in learning to expect the unexpected. But you can get the hang of it...and learn to understand the craziness!

It's going to be hard to stick with a 5000 rs/day budget, India has gotten a lot more expensive. Hotels under 2000 Rs/day tend to be of the "broken plumbing, cockroaches, pan spit on the walls" variety, and I'm spending at least 1000-2000 rs a day on petrol. Food is cheap, but I've also gotten food poisoning twice in the last 3 weeks (where I NEVER got sick anywhere else on the trip eating street food). You'll have a hard time fitting a tour guide on top of that and keeping to your budget (the tour you linked looks good, but also expensive!)

As for road traffic, IMO it's actually gotten a lot better than when I was last here 4 years ago - the motorways nowadays are almost good....

There are so many places but it depends what type of traveler are you.
You like beaches, offroading or looking for mountains.
It would be easy for me to guide you on this only when you tell us about your plan

If you want to add a bit of more adventure, I suggest Kolli Hills in Tamil Nadu.
