We trekked there last year. You have to book a flight from Kathmandu to lukla then walk about 2 weeks. Alternatively you can ride to a small town (starts with a J...) on a rough road and trek 3 weeks to EBC. Getting back down to lukla the long way takes about a week. You can hire a guide and/or Sherpa but it's not mandatory. We packed very light and 3 of us went on our own. The trails are well travelled, you can't get lost. There are lodges every couple of hours. Tons of places in Kathmandu to book a flight. We used Suraj at eagle cargo. If you do want a guide you can book in Kat, Lukla or 2 days up in Namche, the biggest town. It's amazing up there but go slow!
