This year will be my 20th anniversary of joing HU. WOW. That's gone fast.
WOW !!! That's gone fast.
I can still remember the day I joined. I was 25 years old. I'd just broken up from a girlfriend. I wanted to go to Australia to work and escape the U.K. I remember asking a question about riding in Australia on Visordown. Which used to be a great forum in the U.K before it was sold. I have no idea who it was, but I was directed here !! From then I was HOOKED. From wanting to work in Aus, the inspiration I gained on here changed my plans to travelling the world on a bike. I'd be on here every day reading everything. Planning and preparing. I ended up saving for a couple of years and flying off to South America. Very inexperienced and naive about travel. But with already friends I'd met on here. With meetings to go to and parties to look forward to. Those small twists of fate. If I had never been directed to this website, my life would be VERY different now. Crazy........ |
fantastic ! just goes to show you never know what 's around the corner in
life! Keep up your good work on the site Keith:clap::clap: |
21 years for me (I am on my second username). I remember I was at university, aged 21 when I was toying with the idea of an overland backpacking trip from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa. The idea developed into motorcycling around Africa after I graduated, hence I joined this great community.
Soon enough I looked at bikes and decided I was more inclined to a 4 wheeled vehicle... and then Asia looked a lot more enticing than Africa. So I never got a motorcycle (or licence) and never went to Africa (though I am still planning to) but stayed on this forum and have received (and shared) a lot of information. 21 years indeed went fast. Adding it up I spent about 5½ of them travelling. EO |

Congratulations Ted!
Im a newbie, only in here for 11-12 years but got a lot of inspiration and advice in here and I did a 5 years RTW trip 2014-2019. I would probably not have done that trip without the inspiration from this forum. So me too have a lot to thank this forum for. |
Congrats! :)

Congrats Ted,
I just checked and find that I’ve been here for eighteen years. I also realised that I’ve been riding bikes got fifty years now. I started at 16 on a Puch 50 and now at 66 I’m riding a 1200 GSA with my wife on the back, currently in Jaca, Spain. She’s 60. We’ve ridden Europe as far out as Georgia and Ukraine; quite a bit of Southern Africa; and Argentina up to Canada. Fourteen years in Asia too. We have no plans to stop any time yet but want to ride UK to Oz if we can figure out a route. Any suggestions gratefully received. |
Even though I've done a hell of a lot of traveling in those twenty years. It also brings home how many plans I've cancelled and put off. Always with the excuse of 'maybe next year'. But those next year's never come. But the years still pass. So so quickly.
Live whilst you can ! |
Very true.
Going to Oz from the UK though is tough at the moment, with Iran having just jailed a Brit motorbike couple on probably spurious spying grounds. I also don’t want to go via China and pay hugely for a guide. |
Years go by faster than the miles. So yes defiantly do everything that you can do now.... tomorrow never comes.
I registered in 2013, after being an anonymous lurker for a number of years. I got so much info, inspiration and fun from the site. Now I am mostly on the facebook site, different from here but easy to use on my mobile. Anyway happy 20th Ted and one day you will be back out on the road again. Cheers everyone.
