what would you do with a winter in Europe?

where i work is shutting down at the end of december this year (2015) putting me in the situation where i'll have a little money saved (maybe 4000 pounds by then- rough estimate) , and lots of spare time.
figure i might use it to go play on the bike in europe again. or maybe somewhere warm? i dont know.
so i'm looking for thaughts and ideas from you people, or maybe someone to tag along with for a time?

i know of elephant and dragon rally, i think i'll miss elephent cos its in december i think, but might try to hit dragon if i'm still about (feb i think)
other than that. no clue.
where might be warm that time? newzealand? done australia allready, but i think the flights/buying a bike over there will be too costly.

what would you do with this situation?

Either;

a) another job - earn lots more money. Are jobs more available in winter?

b) Asia. Much cheaper than NZ/OZ/Europe for travel.

SE Asia would be my choice. I did it Dec/Jan last year, Thailand and Laos, (see my link in sig block) I was great, you can get a flight for less than £500 if you book soon, I am looking again (used skyscanner)
I rented a bike in Chiang Mai
Great time of year and great people

If you are thinking of going to Europe to find work in the winter. It's going to be a hard job, if not impossible. The tourist trade will be shut down, plus there is a high amount of unemployed people.

The next bit of me is to go south, get the sun. If you are going to be out of a job in December, is traveling a good idea? Who knows when the next pay packet will be dropping through your door?

Any way, I'll keep an eye open on this post. As I also will be looking for some winter sun. What ever you do I wish you well.

I'd consider returning to Nepal which I visited a few years ago but that trip was all too short; the cost of living there is much lower than that of the UK.

A good option also - just about any Far East country.

India and Asia sound great suggestions. Southern India in Jan/Feb can be a bit hot for a new arrival, but if you start in the north and work your way south you will acclimatise. Enfields sound and look great but there's a reason why the majority of Indians ride something else. ;)

If you want to ride your own bike then the south of Morocco is warm, safe and inexpensive. I often spend up to eight weeks there and you don't run out of places to go. But getting there can be cold.

rymm 28 Sep 2015 19:38

morocco, now theres something i diddnt consider, just assumed i'd have to go sideways for warmth, not just down. looking into it it does seem warm enough.
taking my own bike vs buying/renting is certainly preferable, means i allready have luggage and stuff too, and renting for long periods of time would be sucky.
i'll have me a big research on morocco then, and see what do. also gives me all of spain to do in the winter.
from what i've skimmed on here before; dont need a visa for 3 months of morocco or a carnet?

looking at it all, its a bit big and scary.

thanks for the input folks, i'll let yous know if i ever decide on something

oh yeh, not looking for jobs and i have no bills or people dependant on me, so i can come home penniless and be fine (done this a couple of times now)

actually, now i think of it, theres always ski season jobs...

The Elefant is the last week in January. The Altes Elefant and Dragon are both on or abouts Valentines day. The Dragon needs pre-booked tickets, the others you can just turn up.

Yes, no carnet or visa needed, up to three months on a single entry. In some parts of Morocco I can get away with £20 per day for accommodation, food, drink plus whatever I spend on fuel.

Spain in winter can be cold unless you stick to the lower altitude coastal regions. Same with northern Morocco. You need to head south for the warmth. Morocco's Tafraoute and the Anti Atlas are heaven on earth in the winter.

Go skiing in Andorra - very cheap and lots of fun.

Overland Tonka 7 Oct 2015 08:32

We will be in Maroc for a couple of months before heading south..

Have friends that will be there too....been before in Winter and it is perfect, safe, cheap, beautiful and fun. Go and enjoy.
