The worlds most dangerous roads
The BBC has just started a three part series entitled the worlds most dangerous roads. The first part which has Sue Perkins and Charlie Booringman heading up the Dalton highway in Alaska was on last night and is repeated tonight, 5th September, also on iplayer.
From what I saw of it before the weekends revelries drove me to bed at 9.30 looked slightly interesting and I will set the recorder to get the second half. Other programmes include what looks like the camino del muerte in Bolivia and somewhere I did not recognise. Again UK and I am told Europe on freesat only. |
I watched it and quite enjoyed it although I felt parts of it were definiatley acted rather than actually happening
|
Anyone who would choose the Dalton Highway (a.k.a. Haul Road) as one of the world's most dangerous roads has relinquished any claim to being a reliable source of information. I sure hope it's at least good entertainment. Of some sort.
The Bolivian road wasn't too risky either, but at least it used to be dangerous. Mark |
I watched this last night. It was ok but def worth watching for Sue's meltdown in the blizzard lol. ''Charlie, you shouted at me''moan moan, classic:D
|
I fired up the Betamax to tape it. Obviously not expecting any useful or realistic content but will watch it anyway.
|
I also recorded it, I actually felt sorry for Charly B, being stuck with that stupid bitch, he could not have been blamed if he had booted her out the 4x4 and left her. on the brighter side, the next in the series can only get better.

They obviously haven't ridden the A38 between Liskeard and Bodmin on a bank holiday!
Hope it gets shown here in Canada sometime this winter. It'll help me fight the winter blues. Kindest regards Nevil www.mytb.org/nevil |
Watched it last night and didn’t feel like I’d completely wasted an hour of my life.
I struggled a little with how many times the narrator used the “Extreme” word and also with CB’s “When I did the Dakar Rally” comment. Let’s remind ourselves that this is a pretty busy route with many thousands of tons of freight trundling up and down it each year with few incidents. Yes, they could have dropped it off the road or got twatted by a big f*ck-off truck, but "into the jaws of death" it wasn't. I'll watch the rest of the series though; got to have something to look at while I'm eating me tea. :-) |
this is the first i have heard of this program , what channel, day & time is it shown? Thanks in advance. Andy

9pm on Sunday BBC2 (England) and reshown around 11.15pm on Monday same channel. Next week is Nepal, I believe there is only 3 in the series. |
Nice find. Quite enjoyed the programme, though I think CB should have taken the GS up the road... :)

Charlie Boormans "panic" mode always makes me laugh!
Thought the Nepal one was quite interesting. Definately one of the more entertaining programs on the goggle box |
There's a new series with CB riding across Canada starting (I think) in January on channel 5 here in the UK, in case anyone's interested? (Don't shoot the messenger!!!)
This is the official website: Charley Boorman's Extreme Frontiers website |

Oh Lord, there's that "extreme" word again. I think I might partake in some extreme tea making later, followed by some extreme bicky dunking. Cue the thrash metal soundtrack and devil's horn hand signal.

This is the one thing that gets to me abou this forum, There are a lot people who are been there done that...
... it doesn't take a genius to work out that programmes put on sunday evenings are LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT produced for people who are not likely to go there. (experinced travellers are not the target audience) So what if it is a little staged and set up. So what if these people have huge support resources (they are making a tv show) if you don't like don't watch/read/listen to it. These programmes are likely to inspire armcahir travellers to look into how difficult these things are and see how it can be done. It inspired me, Long way down came out just after I did my CBT and I don't know whether I would of done my two short trips accross europe with out being inspired by those shows. |
Well said Mr.Fox!
My winters (and they are long, believe me) are made a lot easier when I get the chance to view shows like this. The TV over here isn't that great in the first place! Regards to you all Nevil |
I second that. I really like these shows. There are a lot of roads out there and if by chance you see a road you bin on, your there again. If you never see any of these roads in the flesh you are riding along. So either way there is something for everyone. Get into the picture or get into the saddle.

Light Entertainment? RM seemed to be trying for drama awards in every second scene. I gave up watching the hamming antics when they were in north Africa on their second series. F Mr F, I don't disagree with your sentiments BUT it really detracts from those who really go out there and do things on their own - as a REAL adventure, often unplanned, under prepared, underfunded and on limited means. I cringe everytime I hear "Oh, like those two actors?" No. No. No. Not like those two actors. Hats off to them for increasing awareness but a huge boo to them for failing to ever even acknowledge the inspiration of "their idea", and en-route mentor who were called whenever lost or in difficulties - Mondo Enduro. And more boos for all their false and duplicitious content in their 'drama' programmes. I am seriously surprised that a certain manufacturer did not take legal action at the way they were apparently misrepresented when they had actually made a fine offer of machines and support - but I understand thier thoughts that they would not necessarily generate a good image for themselves by revealing the 'staged' phone call or content had never happened. Meeting Raiel in Yakutia was another eye-opener to me. All in the name of light entertainment? Self glorification and personal profit, more like! |

Perhaps they should start a Really Unlimited Horizons Web site ? I think that the more bikes we get out there the better it will be. I know that is certainly the case here in Aus. |
If people want light entertainment and an unpretentious and interesting (IMHO) travel program (on 3 wheels, rather than 2), I suggest Billy Conolly's new Route 66 program, the first episode was aired last night on the ITV. Funny, insightful, by a man who cares.
