Hello

Start here Shipments by Travellers | Horizons Unlimited for shipping the bike. (It's a bit hard to find)

Make a list of every country you would like to pass and search here in the hubb about the requirements, check also the date of postings many countries have changed from easy to nightmare, like Thailand.

Some other important things for your research:
- where is the bike registred, -> CDP (carnet de passage)
- your passport, -> visa
- your time limit, when is the best time for each country.

Good luck
Sushi

Thank you very much sushi2831
Found Shipments by Travellers already but there i only could find one useful thread concerning Ferry's. Looks like there is not much going on in between the small Island's :(
Still just at the beginning so i am relaxed...sort out other things like Registration,Insurance etc a lot to do :thumbup1:
Cheers M

There are ferries between all islands in Indonesia and thus ansolutely nothing to worry about concerning ferries.

The things you should worry about are:

1. Shipping - as you would need at least two shipments. Darwin to Dili and Indonesia to Malaysia as there is no vehicle ferry between those countries. Other shipments from and to other destinations can of course be done if you want to do travel other destinations.

2. Visas - organising visas for certain countries, especially visas longer than 30 days can be a PITA. Where and when to do it can be of importance.

3. In certain countries you will need permits and guides to travel through. This needs to be organised well in advance ans it is expensive. As for your mentioned route Thailand and Myanmar are the countries you will need permits and guides. Maybe Iran too depending on your nationality? To get the cost down its better to join a group or form one yourself.

And of course finding a reliable bike and add the right equipement...

I spent the month of May riding in Indonesia on Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores. The ferries are not as horrible as they're made out to be but not exactly great either :innocent:

At the HU meeting in Sumbawa there were several people who had come from Australia via Dili, and from the north, with minimal issues. But the ones coming from the north had gone through Thailand before the changes for motor vehicles entering the country.

I agree about the ferry standards as you mentioned. The only real bad ferry trip I had in Indonesia was from Larantuka to Kupang (Flores to Timor) It was terribly overloaded and I had to sit outside upon a pole where they attach the docking ropes when the ferry sre docked. I had to climb over a temporary pig cage just to get to the saloon and to the toilet. And the last part of the trip it was impossible to reach any toulet, it was simply too much people in the way everywhere. Indont even dare to think sbout what would have happend in case of an emergency...

But its all a part of the adventure - Im told...
