I had mine up for sale a few month ago, also chilean, only 12.000miles on the clock, its a 2012 and I didn't even get any phone calls looking for 3.100.000CLP
So, there is no way he will sell it to a chilean, too expensive.
I still have mine and will hold on to her now.

But his offer of $2000 is a joke, I would take her at way more, just as an extra bike for friends who come over to visit.

I stand corrected. Also surprised! Are you saying a locally registered SA bike sells FOR LESS than a foreign-registered "travel bike" in Chile?

If you are saying your bike at 3.1 is/was a real steal, I fully agree!! Still, I think supply & demand in Chile for a local "adventure" bike in Mid-winter must be VERY weak. Local bike sales are seasonal, right? To me, Ingmar's bike still seems well-priced and seasonally positioned for a Spring into Summer ride.

But my comment was NOT about an appropriate sale price. It was about...

It is bad form to ridicule a Seller's bike and/or sale price. From my questions, above, interested Buyers may be as confused as me. And influenced to ignore a sale that could be good for both Buyer and Seller. Especially since the commenter claims 45000 kms/27000 mi is "a lot". Ridiculous. Nor is the need for "a tire" ($150?) some BFD. I think negotiation- especially by a kibitzer who clearly has ZERO interest in the bike- except at a "give away" price ($2000)- should be conducted only IN PRIVATE.

Public put downs about a bike offered for sale are unacceptable. :nono:

Bob, I am watching prices for both, foreign KLRs in Chile and those with chilean plates for the last few years and I have bought both.
Foreign KLRs used to sell for US$2000 - 3000, and sellers are looking for allot more now. At the same time chilean registered bikes have dropped in price.
I can only say that my bike, up for sale in Feb/March didn't sell, I had it advertised localy and didn't even have anybody come to have a look at the bike. I had it for sale with paniers, fork brace and so on.

I agree with you talking about Johnny's comment.

Interesting. Clearly my generalization about (more costly) "Local" vs (less expensive) "Foreign or "traveler" bikes in Latin America seems wrong in Chile.

Unless what you describe reflects the season of the year, especially with regard to your bike offered for sale in the middle of the So. Hemisphere Winter.

Just a guess.....

Local bikes: Demand (and prices) for high season (December/January) rides?

Foreign bikes: Demand is for earlier purchase for longer distance rides?

What do you think?

Don't agree! Too many people selling vehicles down here who either don't know the ethics involved, or deliberately conceal the likely problems that buyers will have. Buyer beware is all very well, but duty of care is also appropriate, so anyone selling a vehicle anywhere has to be prepared for criticism. Price vs condition is a valid subject. Where would you draw the line? What about a bike that was known to have a serious or dangerous fault and the seller wasn't letting on. What if you knew the papers were fake, but not disclosed?

Buyers making long expensive journeys to buy a vehicle need all the help they can get.

Is a less than 1/2 price offer- useful "help"?
Is complaining about a worn tire- useful "help"?
Is complaining about 45000 kms/27000 mi as 'too much'- useful "help"?

With buying long distance (and selling), I've had only GOOD luck>>
Sep 2014: Bought bike in Lima from Santa Barbara, CA. Excellent experience!
Feb 2015: Sold bike in PuntaArenas, Chile (same price). Excellent experience!

You ask what if...
The Seller were hiding "a serious or dangerous fault".
The Seller were hiding "fake papers".

"What if"... "What if".... What ARE you talking about?
Will "help" and "criticism" uncover this kind of stuff- on the FORUM?
'Due diligence' to check it out, is a later- and PRIVATE stage- right?

Civil, careful questions about a bike ARE of "help".
Complaining about reasonable mileage...and worn tires... and wondering outloud if you're gonna get screwed- NONE of this can be called "help" OR useful "criticism".

Quoting the contributor, I tried addressing his complaints one by one in a straightforward way. Neither patronizing him by being indirect or fastidious. Nor by the use of sarcasm or personal attacks. Guess I failed?

As I'm calling for civility from a contributor who ridiculed price, mileage and "used tire" posted by a Seller, I should be at least as civil as I'd like others to be..

I'll do my best not to go over the line.
