Sturgis USA

Hi I am looking at taking my Harley from Brisbane to the USA for a 3 week ride around August 18, I am looking at entering the US at LA and exiting from LA, would anyone be able to assist with what I have to do including process for shipping, any known costs and what paperwork may be required, I am looking at comparing this cost against hiring a bike.

Perhaps someone might also know of the best shipping method and timeframs

Many thanks in advance

Kevin

Hi Buddah and welcome,
A popular way of getting bikes to North America is with Air Canada who do an excellent deal which is about the easiest and cheapest way of moving a bike as well. They run it seasonally and usually announce in the Northern hemisphere spring when and how much it will cost, I do not know if they fly to the US but if you plan on going to Sturgis somewhere in Canada will be just as close as LA.
I used it last year to fly a bike from the UK, it flew the day before me complete and strapped to a pallet and I was on the road within an hour of touching down in Vancouver. If this interests you keep an eye on this thread.

Flying the bike from Australia to the US for three weeks only? I can only recommend you to do some research and then the math: up to three weeks it is very likely cheaper to rent a bike in the US, instead of shipping one. Airfreight is extremely expensive, even with the comperatively good deals Air Canada is offering.

PS: I see Air Canada is NOT offering the motorcycle shipping service from Australia, just from Europe.

My advice: rent a bike, much easier and most likely cheaper!

No one has yet come up with a scenario in which shipping a bike from one continent to the next is worthwhile for a three week trip. Ever. Even taking advantage of Air Canada or any other special rate you might find, you're looking at $AUS 5-6000. So maybe if money is no object....in which case just do a search on these forums and find out what other people have done.

Otherwise, there's surface shipment. It'll still cost as much as a rental by the time you've paid shipping fees, insurance, and all the rest. Worse, surface shipments tend to take very roundabout routes to wherever they're going, and sometimes end up weeks behind schedule. If that's not a problem, you might put something together which can be financially justified, if determined.

Here's a head start for you: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/get...inent#row-3912

Hope that's helpful.
