DVD being pressed

Hi Guys
Apologies if its caused frustration.

I removed first 5 episodes and will remove six soon. Its going to DVD. Im not making anything from it. Money is going to charity. Still finalising details but in essence its cost me a bloody fortune to do. Would be nice to get some of my costs back but that wasn't the point of making it.

Apologies if its cut off but I had to do at some point.

I've been in touch with Grant and the DVD will be available here soon. I'm sure most people wont have any problem offering a few pounds or dollars for a permanent copy.

There has been a fair few changes to the DVD version and an interesting ending added.

Hope this doesn't piss anyone off too much but it would never sell if freely available.

mollydog 7 Feb 2014 17:34

Good luck with the DVD Steve. Great idea ... and you've earned the right to "break even" on all your work. Very nice of Grant to offer support. Hopefully you'll show up at an HU Rally and do a talk!

My only advice would be to make a nice, spicy trailer (preview) that potential buyers can click on to get a small dose of what the DVD offers. Will really help sales, IMO. I hope all the folks here on HUBB and over on ADV Rider will help support your effort. bier

hmmmmm.... the OP was made 2 weeks ago and last week it was already set to private... So for the ones who were very quick they could enjoy it for free and the rest of us need to pay...

"It's all about the money.... and it ain't no funny...." doh

Sorry about this, but it's just how some of us feel when reading this.

In any case, good luck with the sales!

Could be he has plans to release a CD for sale ... make a few bucks to pay for the trip? I know I wouldn't buy the CD if it were on U Tube FREE!

Even RTW folks got to eat! bier

Hi guys.
Yes they have been removed from youtube. Here's the story.
I never intended to sell the video. I never intended to edit in the first place. It sort of grew from nothing and over the past year has turned into a monster for me.
I had so many people asking me for a DVD that I decided to put to disk. Then with the trip not doing anything worthwhile itself I felt that it'd be great if I could earn some money for charity. Welll one close to my heart is a charity in Australia youthfocus.com.au. Helps teenagers and young adults with depression, self harming etc. Another, is Help for Heroes in UK. I'm sure most of you know them. Suffice to say I have very good reason for picking these two as I have close family members who have needed help and didn't always receive it. I'll leave it there.
So every penny in profit goes to these charities. I've sold about 80 so far, hopefully I'll be able to pay for the production of the DVD in next few weeks. The time and effort that went into them shall never be repaid except by a warm fuzzy feeling that I've done something worthwhile with my time.

Hope you all understand and that you put your hand in your pocket and buy one.

Oh just remembered, A good few changes, sound and script and other things so the DVD version is lot better! Not to mention wee surprise.

Thanks.

you mean it's how you feel when reading this.

personally, I say fair play. There are lots of peole on here fund their trips through sales of books, merchandise and DVDs, so why not this one, just because you missed out on the freebie.

Anyway, it wuld apear that the sales are not going to funding trips but towards a charity

It's not just about me. Don't point fingers or assume things please.
I didn't saw the post until I got a few mails about it and that's why I responded.

I personally have no problem at all people writing books or making dvd's or doing whatever they want to make/raise money. I've bought several books and films in the past few years so that's not the issue.

And I can perfectly understand why, but some people (yes including me) think it's almost a marketing stunt to work this way... Drugdealers also work this way btw... hahahaha!

Like I said, I wish haggis all the best with the sales!

Thanks for that.

Marketing stunt :) I'm not that clever, in fact it's probably more clumsy of me to do it this way. I really should redo the trailer to make people want it more... maybe I shouldnt have put any on youtube ... it wasn't planned, more evolved, really! It was for another TV show that has since died. I started to edit myself and its grew from there - honest!

No worries mate, I know how it is and can be... :innocent:

sorry, my mistake for interpreting your post as it read, like bitter judgemental sour grapes. Whats wrong with marketing your DVD anyway. If you don't market it it's not going to sell much. Rather that then do it on the back of a famous friend!!

If you don't have a problem with it why post such a bitter sounding diatribe? I'm having some difficulty understanding your position as you seem to contradict yourself, but there you go, must be me again.

BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the films!

our man Charlie who managed to make a career out of travelling after getting lucky doing a trip with his famous mate Euan. without him, no one would have been interested in Long way Round. Up until then he was an out of work actor scraping a living doing a bit of painting and decorating.

Jealous, hell yeh!!doh

In other words, if you can make some money out of travelling to pay for more travels, then go for it.

True, can't argue with that...
Although we personally declined all the after trip stuff, we enjoy more giving presentations than writing a book or making a dvd. But that's beside the point!

Do you mean "deals" were offered you to produce a book or DVD about your trip? Or do you mean that you just "decided" NOT to pursue such a project?

One thing I can attest to is just how TOUGH it is to get a film made. Road films are one of the toughest to do. Been there, done it. I worked making documentary, TV and Features for 25 years, with plenty of Doc projects in USA, Asia, S. America and Africa.

Doing it on a bike with NO support as Haggis did, is even tougher. Ewan and Charlie had a whole crew and lots of support. All they had to do was ride and do a daily video diary. (oh, and they had to Cry in Mongolia! :rolleyes2: ) ... and of course pay the bill!

Haggis used folks he met along the way to do shooting. Big respect to be able to get that done and actually get usable footage out of it. bier Then, when you get home, you've got the whole mess to edit, add music and then ... toughest of all ... find distribution. doh

Constant stopping to get a shot really slows down progress and can DOMINATE your trip. But in the end, we're all glad Haggis made the effort as his film fuels all our dreams and imaginations.

I would not (could not) do such a thing now ... just too much like "Work" for me, would take away enjoyment of the ride. Don't get me wrong, I loved my work ... but it's quite hard working for Corporate types under tight schedules and them always bitching about "cost". (don't ask them what their year end bonus was ... :rolleyes2:)

I can barely manage a few pics and send back a few emails. No ride reports ... I'm old fashion, I still send letters and postcards. :mchappy: :blushing:
