Sahara Books
I'm looking for some inspiration. What books would anyone recommend about the Sahara. I've read the Sword and the Cross and enjoy that style of writing: history, culture, exploration etc.
Thanks! |
I think 'Impossible journey; two against the Sahara' by Michael Asher is by quite some margin the best Sahara-related book I have ever read.

Our Friends beneath the Sands by Martin Windrow is a massive (nearly 700 pp) tome covering the 1870-1935 period of the French Foreign Legion, mostly in North Africa.
You can preview the book at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Our-Friends.../dp/0753828561 |
Sounds good! I'll get that, thanks

Ahh yes thank you I'll give that a go!

My all-time favourites include Bagnold's Libyan Sands and, at the other extreme, batty David Newman's The Forgotten Path. (This old route has now reopened).
For colonial history, years ago I recall learning a lot from Porch's Conquest of the Sahara, and I love the Shell Guide du Tourism au Sahara (1955 edition). P. Diole's The Most Beautiful Desert is the World is another nice one, if you know southeast Algeria and the Fezzan. I recently re-read Trek, a well-told yarn of an avoidable tragedy.
