playing in the dunes in Tunisia

Algeria is spectacular. Mauretania untouched by mass tourism. Morocco diversified but generally stony hamada.

If you like to play in the dunes all days- go to Tunisia. Great destination for both bikes and 4x4.

Just come back. Superb experience.

What is open in Tunisia now? As I understand it, most of the southern desert areas are closed for overlanders.

We were told we can not go south of Lac Erreched.
So we were playing in space between El Faouar-Lac Erreched- Ksar Ghiliane-Douz.

In 5 days in the sand our authorisation has been checked only once (near hot springs in Ksar Ghiliane) so if you want to get lost in the dunes without a guide I think it is doable :)

In bigger dunes one is not vissible after a few hundred meters.

Hmmm...sounds interesting! What constitutes 'authorization?'

Sounds nice. I've been to Tunesia, unfortunately not with my own 4x4. But I liked it.

How is Algeria these days to travel through?

We were in Algeria in January 2017. It was calm.

But now something is going on in Tunisia:

I am not too bothered about the current protests. It is actually a bit of democracy in action with people protesting government austerity measures. As always, some yahoos used the opportunity to smash and burn...and got arrested. But the government has already backed down somewhat.

Nope, still looking at possibility of a 2018 Tunisian desert trip. I had been hoping to do southern Algeria...and that will happen, but still too many travel restrictions on where you can roam in the south. A long way to go to be told you 'can't go there' and 'tourists can only drive on this route.' Hopefully, Algeria will open up slowly in the coming years.

But if Tunisia if good for roaming freely in the dunes (without going too far south) that is sounding interesting.

Yeah, you are wright. I have information that the guides are working normally and the situation is pretty normal down south.

In fact, we are going again to Tunisia in April 2018. 5 days of driving/riding through the dunes. We do take the guide. You can join us if you like.
