Hi everybody,

I'm a Canadian planning to cross the US to get to Mexico. I plan to work in Mexico and Central America for over a year. Once I leave Canada my insurance cover me only for few weeks. I need insurance for my motorbike and travel insurance for me. I need long term insurance; for at least a year. Also if the insurance cover more that one country it will be best. I called Motorcycle Express to be told that they can't insure me, because my motorbike is register in Canada. I'm really confuse with that and all the information on the site. I need more specific info or a phone number to call.

Can someone help me please. I'm expecting to leave this month for the US

Hi Dslevoyage and welcome,
I am fairly certain the only place you will get insurance for your bike is on the border when you enter a new country. Your Canadian insurance will cover you for a trip to the US but you will have to take out local insurance when you enter Mexico and at subsequent borders, to the best of my knowledge there is no one policy that will cover you for all of the countries you plan to visit.

One option you might consider:. Leave the Canadian bike home, and buy a bike in Mexico.
If you are working legally and have an FM3 visa, buying a bike is no problem.
I taught in Mexico for three years and legally owned a 200cc there that I bought for maybe $1800 US.

Thanks for your reply. You taught in Mexico! Did you had any kind of degree for teaching before to go there? I'm thinking to get a Tesol certification to do so. I really want to stay there to work, but it seems complicated a little. What was your process to get to work there?

I have a bachelors degree in computer science. After working for the gov'mint for about 13 years, I quit my job and earned a TEFL Certificate. The certificate and a bachelors degree were enough to find teaching work overseas, first in Indonesia and then in Mexico. I enjoyed teaching very much - much more so than IT work - but the pay was only enough to pay my daily bills, so now I'm back in the great white north doing IT work.

Pretty useful info. I find out as well one of the Tesol course in the Chiapas States. I might go there directly to do it. How long did you work in Mexico?
Were you still resident of Canada or you declared yourself no-resident?? And what travel insurance did do have?
