Motorcycle dashcams

The biggest problem with GoPros is that they run out of battery quickly. The next biggest problem is that they are awkward to mount (especially on helmets) and easily stolen (especially off the bike if you go away for a minute).

Motorcycle dashcams have sort of been a thing for a few years, but haven't caught on much. Now it seems the Chinese manufacturers are taking it fairly seriously. One of them sent me a test unit. I made an unboxing video today:

Next step is to mount it on my bike. Gotta find a good way to splice into the ACC wire, otherwise it seems to be really non-intrusive and easily movable to another bike. Sensors should be pretty decent, but I'll post actual riding footage once it's all installed.

This Viofo MT1 unit seems to have everything I'd expect a nice unit to have. GPS receiver, front and back 1080P cameras with a picture-in-picture recording capability, stamping the GPS data on the video itself if you want, loop recording up to 10 minutes by default, a remote control to trigger recording an interesting event, WiFi with the ability to download to a phone app... It's not cheap - about $300 - but cheaper than a gopro and no faffing about on an everyday basis.

There are few of these around now. For a while INNOVV was the popular brand but then reports came out of unreliability and unresponsive customer "service".

When I fitted mine I got a V-SYS unit off aliexpress and been using it with no problems for the last year and a half. The camera heads are small and unobtrusive and the recorder unit is versatile and easy to set up, tucked under the seat. There's a control button that goes on the handlebar for tagging/saving events. Works for me.

re MT!

Looks interesting and cheaper than the innovv2

I have the innovv2 and it is working ok.

1080p is fine but they all run at 30fps with high compression so the quality for a dashcam is acceptable.

I would prefer 60fps so you can use it it for vlog - travel videos etc. Yes more memory is required but 256gb cards are available for around £35.
