Husky

Hi, I have just joined HU today. I am planning a solo trip through Central America, (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico) USA & Canada. I am shipping my bike, a Husqvarna 701 enduro, and will be collecting it in Panama at the end of April. I am visiting my son who is working in a remote part of Panama organising Kayak fishing trips. I am with him for one week and then will start my own adventure. Can anybody give me any advice about travelling through this region this year. I know that this part of the world can be difficult and this is my first visit to this region. Appreciate any comments. Thanks , Steve

Hey Steve, welcome to the Hubb.

That sounds like an exciting trip that you have planned.

The Central American Borders stink to cross. I crossed them in 2007, but I imagine not too much has changed in the efficiency department.

The Husky might be a bad choice to ship down there because of parts availability. You would probably be better off taking a KLR650 because they are tanks and if you were to have a problem there would be a greater likelihood of getting it fixed faster down there.

I took a BMW F650 and ended up regretting not choosing the KLR650.

You should checkout the travel/ bikes for sale section. A lot of guys end up selling their bikes at steep discounts in Argentina or Panama because they do not want to ride them back.

South America would be a lot more fun to ride than Central America in my opinion.

Welcome to HU!

OTOH, to offer a counter to gatogato's post, you own the bike, you probably love it, they're reasonably reliable, and you can always ship parts in from anywhere to anywhere today - all it costs is money - and it can be a ridiculous amount - but you CAN get parts in.

Also while the borders are indeed a pain, still, (we went through in 87 and travelled in Panama for a month in 2017) the region is wonderful, full of great people and interesting things to see.

In the end it's YOUR trip, do it however you like, and I hope you have a great trip!!

Hi Steve
I am presently looking into shipping my 701 back to Vancouver or Toronto Canada from Guatemala. I am UNPLEASANTLY surprised at the quotes I am getting. Since you are shipping yours I'm thinking perhaps you've done a lot of research on this. Any advice or company recommendations would be much appreciated!
Would also consider selling if you know anyone.
Thanks
Rick
