Hi Jim. I've been away from home for five years now. Home being southern Ontario and as Canadians many go into hyperventilating just THINKING of having no health care! I wasn't going to let that rule my fun and the price of insurance........... forget it. Ok, I'm soon to be 65 but healthy, knock on wood. I have been living in Guatemala for the last two years. Six months in Mexico and Belize before that.
I have NO HEALTH CARE and have no regrets. Observing my other cruiser friends have "issues" and having to seek help as well as my biker buddies dealing with "get offs" has shown me that help is usually available at very reasonable cost. I have concluded that the out of pocket money would be less than a monthly insurance premium. I can only speak of Guatemala at this time but heath care in Guatemala city is first rate. It is often cheaper for a US citizen to pay out of pocket than to fly back to the US and then pay some more. I know I know but in Canada it's "free". An old Gringo here the other day just told me he had his prostate removed for the out of pocket expence of $1500 US. Friends have had bones pinned to be later checked out back in the States and a surgeon saying the job was well done. There are are horror stories in EVERY country no doubt. If I was REALLY worried my idea of insurance was to fly back to Canada. I know this doesn't directly answer your question but as a fellow Canadian just sharing my thoughts. Living the good life in Guatemala. Rick |

We go for "shorter" trips like a year or half a year, we just keep our Dutch health insurance running. Because you have to (unless you really unregister). And it gives health care world wide, can be expended to pay also the local prices which can be higher.
Situation is quite different if you are going to be abroad for years on end. But there are also professional travel insurance which can cover your health insurance if you want. But check what you are actually getting covered. |
