General cost of living India V Morocco

I am hoping finances permitting to head somewhere warmer for a couple of months after Christmas. The two options I am considering are flying to India with my bicycle or renting a motorcycle there or taking the ferry to Spain then Morocco with a motorcycle. The flight and the ferries cost about the same but I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea of general cost of living comparisons between the two countries?

General cost of living India V Morocco

With the rupee so low against the pound India will be very cheap, especially if you find budget accommodation, take public buses, get second class trains instead of flights and eat where taxi drivers and truckers eat (known as Dhabas). I suppose a lot of it would depend on your expectations and preferences.

In rural areas of India, a single room with shared bathroom could be as little as 150 INR, that's around a pound fifty. For a comparison, maybe a similar room in a large city would cost double that. For somewhere like Mumbai between 1500 and 2000 would buy you a private bathroom and probability A/C too. Mumbai is considered to be the most expensive in terms of accommodation.

Eating costs are similarly low, if you avoid tourist restaurants. A Thali (like a full all you can eat lunch) will cost between 20 and 70 INR, while street snacks (simosas, spring roles etc) can cost as little as 15 INR for a decent fill.

However, India isn't probably the best place for wildcamping, given the high population to land ratio and the sheer unabashed curiosity of the locals. People would be friendly no doubt but personally I'd find camping in India to be an exhausting prospect and one with little peace or privacy. Assuming wildcamping is good for Morocco this could be something to factor in.

Hi not been to India for about four years but before that have been there about fourteen times, mostly around the south. The wife and I would spend about seventy pounds for both of us, in a three week period, that would include food, transport eg buses rooms and the odd beer. Basically the country is dirt cheap if you are sensible and stay off the beer, which you can't find in most northern states anyway.
As for Morocco was there last year for three weeks on the bike, I lived it up, staying in four star hotels at twenty pounds a night, food was well cheap as was fuel. There was cheaper accomodation but I had just retired so had a blow out.
Of the two countries Morocco is the one to ride, I would not do India on a bike as it's lethal, people will be on this forum and tell you I survived but as much as I love bikes, I'm afraid it's a bus or larger............ Ten years of travelling there backs up that opinion.
Indian drivers don't give a toss about bike riders end of doh
Still love the country though..............

Thanks for your replies, I have opted for India and bought a ticket to Mumbai this morning. I know what you mean about Indian driving Chris, I have both motorcycled and cycled there before but not in Morocco where I hope to visit at some later date.

Well stay safe mark, it's a beautiful country and it tugs my heart strings but I'm still not going to ride over there :scooter:
If you get a chance visit the Taj, it is with out doubt one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen and I have been lucky to see alot.
