Do we need a book/magazine/DVD review section?

I was wondering if members would find a section for posting reviews of books, newspaper or magazine articles and television programmes or DVDs helpful? I am of course talking travel related and if so would it be restricted to those involving personal transport such as motorcycles, cycles and cars or would it cover all travel related media? Your thoughts please.

Three days and no replies - surprising. I'd have thought a "media" review section would be a useful addition and I'd probably post up stuff in it from time to time - unless setting it up involves Grant in hours of tedium to arrange it. A good idea (the section, not Grant slaving away in the code mines)

Depends on the subject. If you were planning to review Wuthering Heights I could expect it in a book review section rather than a Yorkshire regional forum, but if it were a book/DVD on travel in South America I'd rather it was posted in the South America forum. Otherwise it dilutes the region-specific forums.

I think it's a great idea. A book/DVD forum should not dilute other forums ... it's a BOOK REVIEW (or DVD review), and as of now, there is no place on HUBB offering reviews of Overland travel media other than on bespoke ads on the site.

Once readers have read a good review or preview, say on S. America, they for sure would then return to the S. America forum for a 2nd helping of inspiration.

Not only will this help members/travelers launching new films & books, could also centralize information on latest media releases regards overland travel and give members a quick peek at new work.

In fact, such things now get LOST in sub forums and ignored.

Reviewers could link to Vendors forum as well. But the forum, IMO, should only feature reviews or press releases about books, DVD's or films, not prices or sales pitches.

Could also cover (or link to) things like personal appearances/talks/slide show/screenings or book release events announcing schedules and dates. It should help support vendors which could help advertising on HUBB/HU.

I like the idea of a review section. I've bought some 'interesting' DVD's before now, and a heads up would have been useful :oops2:. These reviews would not dilute they sub-forums, but would serve as an interesting sub-forum in its own right.

Go to Books & magazines | Horizons Unlimited for a massive listing of books and DVD's of interest to travellers. Each book has a space at the bottom to ADD your comment / review.

Any more comments on this thread / subject much appreciated!

I'm a new guy here, but I'd like to see it!

I primarily use HU on the mobile so if the section was easily viewable via that method I'm all up for it.

Besides, anything that improves HU overall can't be a bad thing..

Have you tried Books & magazines | Horizons Unlimited on your mobile? That section already exists and works well - we think - so please check it out!

I'm REALLY not a fan of duplicating sections, just leads to dilution and poor results.

How embarrassing :blushing: How long have I been coming here (and posting drivel ) and I didn't know that section existed. I really must get out (of the HUBB section) more.

Admittedly, I'm still learning to navigate the mobile HU element. (Nobody mention old dog new tricks please).

I fully understand the duplication issue.

Grant, any chance you can add an audiobook category to dropdown menu.

Or some way to mark the existing books as "available as audiobook" and make it searchable.

Scootergal 12 Mar 2016 12:19

And while you're there - can you also make it display more than 9 books at a time. 20 would be a good number.

Done! 18 as it's only in three's and that seemed to be plenty :)

thanks for the idea on audio books, they weren't at all popular when we originally created the listing.

Grant Johnson 12 Mar 2016 21:56

Note that audio books are not searchable and someone - me - has to go in and search all the books and search Amazon etc to see which are available in audio - so a massive amount of work that just can't happen, so if you know of one that is in audiobooks send me the link to the audiobook and the link to the book on HU you're talking about and I can add it quickly.
thanks!
