carpathian mountains
greetings people of HU
a small question if anybody can point me the right direction, i am currently in the middle of planning my trip from ireland to magadan russia 2015 on route i have chosen to hit eastern europe before passing through turkey etc rather then the northern route of ukraine and the likes, if possible,i would love to ride an off road trek through the length of the carpathians i searched a bit online but couldnt find much,so im hoping there might be somebody familiar with the carpathian mountain range with advice or maybe somebody that done my proposed route or similar once i leave southern poland(lesko) i plan to enter ukraine, hopefully the politics might let me pass through by the time i leave:( the carpathians start at the border then touching through southern ukraine the route i would prefer would hopefully be an off road dominated journey the whole lenght joining into northern romania then linking onto the transylvanian alps towards the transfargarasan highway so basically if you journeyed this area or know of any forums or blogs on off road sections through the carpathians a link would be greatly appreciated regards,brian:thumbup1: ps:i dont want people doing research and so on off your own backs:thumbdown: just the people that might have the experience and knowledge to pass on to an eager studentbier |
Nice idea, and I would say quite managable. Just bear in mind once you hit Ukraine the on road will be like off road a lot of the time, especially in the mountain areas!
I like the Ukrainian Carpathians because it has a real fronteir feeling to it. But there really are very few through roads in parts of it,even though it is not very rugged compared to say Romania. Google maps is your friend there, paper map options are limited and unreliable even for hiking. As you'll be relying on logging tracks you should be able to make them out. Kosiv, Rahkiv are worth a visit , one for its market and the other because it will make you think you are at the end of the world, almost Mad Max style. Osmoloda is worth passing through, its a dead end logging town, you come in from the North and I would love to find a way out heading South! I'll hopefully be heading the same direction but on 4 wheels next year. |
I rode the Carpathian mountians last year in both Ukraine and Romania just after i rode to the Tatras Mountians in Slovakia and Poland.
To me the Carpathians mountians in Romania was more amazing and also right at the top of the mountians was tracks to follow so was very motorbike friendly and also if you like to feel alone you will. every so ofton you come to wooded gates you open/close and then after its miles of open land:funmeteryes: In Ukraine there was little tracks if any, it might sound good but for alone rider i think it is better to have small tracks. For Carpathians i say head to Ukraine Romania more. He is a youtube video of Romania Carpathians WesleyDRZ400 Romania - YouTube Also on my ongoing blog link below you will find my ride report for these areas. |
thanks guys,
im sure this particular region of eastern europe is exactly what im looking for, wilderness and solitude along with breathtaking scenery. the carpathians is a place i feel will have it all it is great to get into the heart of the country too, away from city lights and the chaos of traffic, overcrowding etc, google maps has helped me with certain ideas and routes,my eyes are stinging from studying satellite images to help me get the most of the journey.i suppose once i get there the maps and gps will keep me at least going south:confused1: its good to hear encouragement,as i know very little about the area im very surprised its not talked about more in forums or articles all the better maybe....more isolation from humanity and tracks for me i guess:thumbup1: ps..i am a people person, but they just have to be the right ones :) i will read your blogs wesley, get a taster of things to come, regards |
