(T)Rusty ol' Divvy

Hi all, this is my first post. Been reading through various threads, the past half hour, and had an epifo.. epiphony?.. Idea, ahem. I past my DAS nearly 5 months ago, and ever since have been riding my £300 XJ600S, shes a bit of a rough old girl, looks like shes been well ridden but never dropped or Damaged, 43000 miles and a we-bit rattly. Anyway, come march when hopefully the weather dry's up a bit im gonna buy somthing cleaner, march is also MOT time for the old div, and im hoping, providing she will pass to keep her for my workhorse/ hack, but, thinking along the cheap bike/adventure route, is the equipment out there to give her a couple of tweaks and make her suitable for some off road/onroad travel, obviously she aint gonna be a crosser, but prepare her for some veriety.. Cheers all.

Offroad ???

Hi Wil,

I ride a 900 divvy and wouldn't really think about it. I know there is a guy that has gone around the world on a R1 but I would not hold much hope of getting her (900) very far off road. Well not with my skills anyway. What I am saying is unless the 600 is a far bit different I don't think she would last very long. Suspension, exhaust that runs under the engine...that kind of thing.I suppose you could jack it up a bit to get more ground clearance...

The mods I have done/doing to mine for a forth coming road trip are: Taller screen (skid marx), Tribo seat cover for the pillion, adding 12 volt cigarette socket, head light protector, changing the fork oil for a heavier grade 10 to 15w and full hard luggage. It had engine crash bars when I bought it. Also thinking about some hand guards, when I can find/make some to fit.

This is not the end of the mods but all I can think of at the moment.

Happy New Year!

Yup, you are probably v-right, dont think she would make it to far off road, maybe it would be fun anyway, with a set of nobblies - of course. Just done 270 miles between new years eve and new years day on her,:funmeteryes: and boy o' mother chuffin' boy was it cold, my bro was on his CBR600 and ended up with a nasty case of frostbite. A taller screen seems a good shout, had a big problem with freezing fog on my visor and road grime, mainly salt, my down pipes were rather white and it blacked out my headlights to the point where my bro couldnt see me n'more. Tested out our x-mas prezzies, in the form of a set of Cobra radios and Pama headsets, worked a treat. As for hand gaurds used a set of oxford 'muffs' all the way, kept the wind off the extremities, didnt do much for my aerodynamics (or street cred) tho!
Cheers for the help Rob.

The weather sounds nasty as mate. The screen was well worth the cash. It was a little quieter and I could now ride with the visor up. You could see your breath come of the helmet and gently blow away. Got the head light protector from the same place.

Don't get me wrong, off road is probably possible. Just that I wouldn't that's all. It would be cool to see a divvy all dressed up in dirt bike clothes though.

Cheers

She needs to lose some weight.... jack her up , might get away with new, longer forks and a better set up on the back, dont think the rear needs lifting to much .got a nexxus exhaust 4-2-1 on at the mo, could get a 4 into 2 made up, i know they had these as standard but im guessing the downpipes are quite exposed and i cant seem to find them anywhere, the guy i got the bike off seems to thing all the originals have rotted away.. plenty of room 4 a bash plate tho.. Well these are still ideas, maybe see what i can get hold of. just found myself on ebay, fingering thru the cafe racers.. maybe a project for the summer... W

New plan, divvy is staying on the road, she a decent enough hack, gonna look into an enduro/supermoto somthing a we bit more capable. W

Yup, as fun as it would be converting her, I think the road is the best place.

Maybe an DR650 ?
