TS185K Re-Wring igntion
Hello, this is my first post on the forum., my name is will. So now that we've gotten trough the introductions, lets delve right in.
I have a Suzuki TS185K (1973) With the US & Canada Wiring system that was hot wired at some point. I bought a new ignition and got the Japanese one. The American is responsible for normal running stuff and the lights, while the one got only controls running. Can anyone help me wire the running lights out to a separate switch seeing as though i don't make enough money to get another new ignition?\ I already have a wiring diagram from the factory service manual, but it hasn't really helped me. I do have access to an electric multimeter. I do have prior experience with electronics. I do not have the ability to get the proper ignition. Thank you guys for reading, I hope you can help. |
Okay, so i got the ignition wired up on my own, but now i was riding down a stretch of road when the engine suddenly rev'ed uncontrollably. It wasn't because the throttle stuck, i checked that and put an aftermarket spring in it because i know Mikuni carbs tend to have sticky throttles (mine used to). i think it's because i had the idle valve all the way in because it wouldn't idle otherwise.
Any other suggestions? |
Revving out and 'going diesel' can be caused by running too lean. If there is an air leak anywhere (ie. carb inlet manifold, crankcase gasket, l and r crank seals) it'll run too hot and self detonate as a result. It would also explain why it won't idle.

Score, thanks bro. i got it ti idle by increasing idle speed setting on the carb to start, and backing it off while it warmed up, increasing it again to turn off choke, then backing it off again while it warmed up the rest of the way.
How can i tell if the oil injection doesn't work? It seems to be a bad idea to ride it if the OI doesn't work. :) Any tips on removing the exhaust baffle to clean it? mine comes right out, but my buddy ed has a '74 and the baffle is STUCK. thanks |
If the oil injection system is faulty, the bike should seize pretty quick. If there is white smoke coming from the exhaust and the motor hasn't seized it's probably working. As for the baffle, mine too was seized. I never got it out so I can't be of much help. Perhaps soaking it in fuel or wd40, tapping it lightly with a soft faced mallet and wriggling it out would do the trick?

Thanks again, man. The OI seems to be working fine, little puffs of white smoke during idle, little less during acceleration (need to tighten the throttle link?) and we got the baffle out of my buddy's. Vice grips holding on to the end of the bafle and hit the grips with a hammer, pulled out in about two minutes. The first few millimeters are the hardest. lol. Anyway, thanks again.
Any tips for tuning the oil injection? I want this bike to last forever, so having that tuned right is a must. Also, my buddy's bike smokes heavily during hard acceleration. could it be OI system as well? Thanks again for your help. |
Hi Will, here's a manual for a later model ts http://www.4shared.com/file/97906541/9cd69ebd/TS185_TS185A_-_1980_service.html
i don't know if the setup is the same on the 73 version, but perhaps it will help. |
i don't know what the hell's going on with that link. here's take 2:
4shared.com - document sharing - download TS185, TS185A - 1980 service.pdf OI adjustment should be on p36. |
thanks a lot, man. runs like a dream, now. i got the wire form the magneto and the wire from the VR mixed up. (duuuuhhhh....)
My buddy's runs like hell. won't accel over 25. thinking carb is clogged, the head is carboned, or the piston rings are looisng compression. we already cleaned out the exhaust baffle. |
Good to hear you got it sorted :thumbup1:

I am the buddy in question in this post, and am looking for advice:

Will check out this site:
Motorcycle / ATV Parts & Accessories You can get lots and lots of stock parts ordered, and tons of free diagrams. Plus, I found the wiring diagrams online that are in color: http://smokeriders.com/diagrams/Suzu...250_Wiring.gif its the 250, with the same wiring, and that site has 3 185 diagrams |
