Muffler, is it worth it.

I'm new to biking and have a DL 650. The guys I work with that ride keep telling me to fit a staintune exhaust for performance.
Does it really make that much of a differance?
I am planning a trip to Africa with the bike and cant decide whether this is an extravagance or something that will help?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Darryl

Does your bike have a catalytic converter fitted as OE?
If yes- and if you are going to take it to Africa - then the Staintune exhaust replacement is 'need to do' (or one like it) as you will find some unleaded fuel there but a heaps more of leaded fuel.
That lead will, in time, clog up your exhaust's catalytic converter which will reduce your bike's performance substantially.
To give you an idea- I had a standard exhaust on my F650 Dakar and after about 8000miles of almost all leaded, I replaced it with a Staintune.
The difference in power was huge- the engine seemed to 'breathe' and power came back- The Staintune is still on the bike- A well made (weight saving for me as now a single) exhaust made by a great Ozzy firm!

Thanks Bertrand. My bike is a 09 model so I say it would probably have the cat converter.
I didn't even think about the fuel being leaded.
I assumed that all fuel these days was unleaded.
Thanks again for the info.

Admittedly regarding DR650 rather than DL, but my girlfriend's DR has a Staintune exhaust (and possibly carb jetting changes, I don't know) whereas mine is identical except with a stock exhaust. The difference in power is astounding, it pulls better from low RPM, feels stronger everywhere and is much more willing to sit on 110kmh.

However I still managed to ride everywhere required with a stock exhaust and less power.

The DL is fuel injected ,it won't make much difference although it might sound more powerful .
