gs500 problem, no throttle responce??

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a Suzuki GS 500 in Paris, which I plan to ride around Europe. It had an erratic idle and wasn’t running very smoothly. There seemed to be evidence of rust in the tank (sediments in the fuel filter), so I just cleaned out the carburretors to get rid of any gunk. I did not pull everything apart and cleaned basically with warm soapy water. Mainly because I don’t have too much experience with carburretors, and the only manual I have is in French. I tried to be careful when I did this, but obviously could have done something wrong:oops2:

The bike is now running worse :censored: I was able to get it stared, after many attempts (hill starting, the battery is flat, my fault, yay!) I got a lot of backfiring and popping in the first 15 mins . Is this normal ? Is it just fuel settling back into the system ? The main problem is there is no throttle responce. Sometimes it seems very delayed, other times non at all. It seemed to get to a point where it would idle OK, but still no consistant throttle responce. Certainly not fit to ride. I checked the obvious; throttle cable connected and adjusted, fuel in float bowls, correct pipes connected. I am happy to take it to a mechanic (my tools and knowledge are limited) but would need to find an English speaking one in Paris, preferrably down hill:biggrin:

Any advice is really appreciated . Did i screw up? If so, how? I’m eager to learn how to properly fix these things myself, but have trouble communicating with anyone here. I’m waiting on my English manual. I just want to get the bike fixed to make it to the HU meeting in Brussels. Hope to see you there. :scooter:

common problem with gs 500.take the tops off the carbs and 10 bucks says the diapraghms have come adrift from the slides.
put the rubber diapragms under the plastic collar, get some super glue and put a drop inside of top edge of slide and here's the trick, push the collar into the slide quickly and evenly before the glue grabs.
do it wrong and you'll never get the collar out without breaking it!
failing that buy new slides - pricey tho'

Quick note: BOTH throttle cables connected? Popping and backfiring sounds like the plugs need a clean or it may be running rich.

If you have a problem with the diapragms this company may be able to help.

They also have carb spares.

Problems fixed

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. problems all fixed. Took to a mechanic, only talked French but had a friend help me. Charged the battery, changed the fuel filter (the one on there was too large, couldn't find a smaller one) and now it seems to be running fine. Hard to determine if there was anything else he did, but i'm not goin to question too much, it works better now than before.

Hope to see u at the HU meeting:scooter:
