DL 650 - Chain tightening
 

I have been riding Honda Transalp & Africa Twin for 12 years and the manual recommend about 4 cm chain-slip, but I was using 7 cm.
Tomorrow I get my new DL 650 V (2006) - I will use it for my RTW - with departure from Denmark in the middle of may 07.
Do anyone have some advice about Chain-slip?

Can you tell me why you were using 7cm instead of the recommended 4cm? If we know why then it might help give you better advice.

Chain slap
 

Try lining up the countershaft the swingarm pivot and the rear axle. That should be the tightest point for the chain. That is where you should have some flex left in the chain, that is the chain should not be tight. Then check the whole chain for a point where it is tightest. Chains do wear unevenly. After checking the chain at the tightest spot of the chain at the tighest spot created by the countershaft, swingarm pivot point and rear axle then set the bike on the sidestand with your normal traveling load and see how much slack you have....that is how much slack you need in your chain. A couple of photos would make this much clearer, why don't you stop by when you are in montana USA and I will show you.
