adjusting an engine to run on low octane fuel
 

I have a DRZ-250 2007 and it is primed by the manufactures to use 95 octane or higher. As everyone knows there is no guarantee that you will be able to find or believe that the petrol supplied to you is 95 Octane when in Asia or Africa (which is where im going on my next trip)

Can anyone tell me how I could adjust my bike, so that it runs more efficient using low octane fuel? or is this a bad idea?

Adjust your right hand and/or riding style.
Slower/gentler twist-grip turning and more gear changing.
As soon as you hear it "pinking", back off the throttle.

You could also take a bottle of octane booster to add to the really bad stuff.

Unsure if you're asking for model specific or general info.

If general, then retarding ignition timing is a simple way to cope with low octane fuel. Lowering compression also works, but is clearly a little more involved.

As for specific info about the DRZ250, I'm afraid I can't help beyond the basics Redboots has given. By being careful with the throttle and gears you can ride even on absolute rubbish fuel.
