I just reinstalled the motor in my bike and cant get it to run, it fires on initial crank but wont stay running even when still cranking. It ran well before but had noisy trans bearings. I have a repair manual on disk but it has no diagnostics. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Hi, welcome to the HUBB,

a few things to try:

pull a spark plug lead and make sure you are getting a good spark as the engine turns over - all the time.

if no:

as the bikes 10 years old, look for any broken or partially broken wires, if the engines been out the wiring looms been disturbed from its normal position, check all connectors for corrosion and clean them too. make sure you are getting a good earth all the time.

make sure theres no problems with clutch & side stand cut out switches and run/off switch.

if yes:

make sure spark plugs are clean, tight and you have a good electrical connection.
good fresh gas
check carb -anything different in set up?
any crap in fuel line, carb, float chamber, fuel filters? bleed air out of fuel line too.
if you are using stock tank, make sure vacuum hose is on properly between carb and petcock and theres no air leaks.
properly oiled clean air filter

if you have a good clean spark, good earth, air and good gas and it still wont run, strip the carb and clean it.

let us know how you get on.

hey, thank you very much for the help, I checked all connections, grounds etc., took the carb apart and cleaned it(looked clean before). Now it will run as long as it is cranking. You mentioned a vacuum line with the stock tank, mine isnt stock but is there a line I might have missed?

Hi,

for a stock Mikuni BST40 the vacuum inlet comes out vertically in front (slightly right) of the black carb top cap (if you are sitting on bike)

if you dont have a stock tank, (or any tank with a vacuum operated petcock) then the hose should be closed off so no air can enter (fold over and cable tie)

was the bike running perfectly before the engine came out?
did the jets look ok or worn when you cleaned the carb ?
check fuel inlet to carb - there might still be a small plastic filter in there, throw it away and use an in line filter if you havent already.
Make sure the choke is working ok -on/off

if you have a good spark then it still sounds like a gas feed/carb problem, but never discount the posssiblilty of an electrical gremlin

I think I got it figured out, after tracing all the wires and putting it back together I tried another battery, the old one wouldnt hold a charge so i had a charger hookedup, does this make sense, cause it works now?bier

stranger things have happened.....pesky electrical gremlins....

at least your back on 2 wheels:thumbup1:
