1998 DR650se Electrical problem
 

Hi can any one help i have two dr650se one is a 1998 model the other a 2006. On the 2006 if i remove eather battery lead the bike keeps running the same as a car dose running off the alternator but on the 1998 model if i remove the lead the engine cut out instantly. Ive ad a meter on the generator and all appears ok ive replaced the rectifier but still the same. Any got any idears why this is. Thanks Skip

Just a guess, but on one model the battery is part of the ignition circuit and on the other it's only used for turning the starter.

Once the bike is running, the Capacitor in the CDI holds the charge and produces the spark for the coil to fire the plug.

There was perhaps a model change in the years or someone has adapted yours.

very little has changed on the DR650 since 96.
