02 DR650 Tail Light Q

I own an 02 DR650 and I am having problems w/ the rear tail light. Due to poor design the tail light lense is separating from the plastic bracket that ties the light to the fender. A simple angle bracket holds the lense to the plastic cover, relying on the strength of the angle bracket to apply light pressure. Vibration (it's actually smooth for a big single) and hard off-road riding have caused the angle bracket to bend, thus the separation. I saw a picture of an 03 and it appears that the light has been changed to a flush fit design, eliminating the problem. I tried to get the 03 part from the dealer under warranty. They did not get back to me. Will the 03 light drop in? Any idea what it costs? Any other fixes? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks JP.

I just swapped the large, breakage-prone rear light with the low profile, DR 250 tailight. It fit perfect in the fender, even the wire colors matched! Looks better and is much lighter. It still very bright and visible. No modifications are required.

oops! should have given more info... My bike is a 2003 DR650 and comes stock with the large tail light. The one you saw must have been swapped. The low profile replacement comes from a DRZ250 and was very reasonable.
About $30-$40 US. Took me about 10 -15 min to swap...

Thanks for the info. Should I buy the tail light for the 02 or the 03 DRZ250? I guess that they are most likely the same?
