Where to sell my car in West-Africa, contacts?

This summer, 4July- end of August, we're (three student fellows from 22, 21) planning a trip with a car from Amsterdam (NL) to sell it in West-Africa. We want to fly back from Dakar. We are now searching to buy a cheap car in Holland or perhaps Germany (around 1000-2000 euro) so if anyone could help us:thumbup1:

But buying a car isn't the biggest difficulty. Selling the car in Africa for a fair price and doing the paperwork (we need to prove back home that it is sold) are more important. We want to cross Mauretanie, Mali, (maybe Senegal/Gambia/Guinee-Bissau) and sell our car overthere.
Does anyone on this forum has good/ contacts (or just names) where we could try sell our car and where they can do the paperwork? It would be great (just give me a PM)!

We know it's the rainy season and stuff, but this is the time we've vacation!

If you're buying an old (more than 5 years old) you won't get into Senegal with it without a lot of problems! Selling it there will be an even bigger problem!

Gambia I think now has similar laws ...

no problem in Mauretania and Mali (also not in Guinée, Niger, Burkina Faso, Tschad, Cameroun). In this countries paperwork only in Mauritania needed (toll), because of the stamp in your passeport. In the other no paperwork. Tell in bigger towns somebody, that you will sell the car, the clients are coming soon.

I drove an old Ford Fiesta to Mali a couple of years ago. On arrival at our hotel in Bamako we were immediately approached by people interested in buying the car. We eventually sold it to a dealer for 400 Euros (a Mercedes 190 diesel belonging to a friend of ours went for 1700 Euros, despite having some accident damage) after much haggling.

Although the car is not stamped into your passport in Mali we ran into problems at the airport. We had entered the country from Mauritania and they do stamp cars into your passport so the Malian customs guy soon worked out that we'd entered Mali with a car and were now trying to leave by air. Importing a car by official channels attracts hefty import duty so he was keen to find out where our car was. We told him friends were driving it to Burkino Faso. He clearly didn't believe us and kept us for about fifteen minutes before letting us go. I think he just got bored.

Some friends of ours had similar problems a few days later. They all managed to talk their way out of it but it is something worth thinking about.

When you enter Mali the customs guys give you temporary import paperwork for the car. On that form there is a section for leaving the car in Mali for a short time. I think a hotel owner can sign it to say you're leaving it there for a few weeks while you go back to Europe. So a few Euros in the right direction could get this form signed.......

sorry, but both informations are wrong.
senegal cancelled the 5 years law since january, 1th. 2009.
nowadays you can enter again with no problems, they issue passavant again, cost is 2500,- cfa. in theory you can even sell your car again in senegal but till today nobody seems to know how much the import tax will be.

gambia has never had any of this laws and is still one of the easiest countries to sell your car because they also issue a temporary import paper so the car is not entered into your passport.
to proof back home you sold your car, you simply do a sales contract and a transfer of ownership. if you want, you can even keep your numberplates and car documents.

try to find a 4 door, diesel engine, manual gear limousine typ as they do not like the break ( kombi ) type her.
mercedes 190d, all types of toyota dieselcars, opel omega, vw golf, peugeot 405 for example.
if you find a van like mercedes 207, 307, 208, 209, 309, that will sell even better. they should have 5 gear, sliding sidedoor, backdoors,
no plastik - ( camping ) roof.

but be aware that the car business is almost dead over here, specialy in the rainy saison it may take time to sell for a reasonable price.

flight tickets from gambia are quite costly at the moment, expect something like 500,- euro oneway to europe,cheaper from dakar / senegal,
320,- oneway with air algerie to europe.

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for the valuable information. We've bought a white Mercedes 200D, manual, diesel, in very good condition. It got an extensive checkup and maintanance and is now ready for Africa! It's from 1989, has driven 360.000 km, tires in good condition. We will be in Africa (Mauretanie, Mali, Senegal, Gambia) from 1-30 August, if anyone has interest to buy this car let me know!

We're still in need for some contacts in: Mauretanie, Mali, Senegal or The Gambia. As we heard selling our car in Senegal would be tricky because nobody knows how much the import costs are. Gambia or Mali are the most attractive (because of the Rainy season less money around especially in Mauretanie).

Does anyone knows if there are any good places on the internet to sell this car, or where we can offer it?:scooter:

When we rolled into Bamako we were approached by lots of people asking if the cars were for sale. It took a couple of days of negotiating to get a good price but actually advertising the cars, making contacts in advance, etc wasn't necessary.

Our cars were UK-registered and we listed them as scrapped with the authorities once we got home.
