Where best to stay in Mombasa?
Need to spend a few nights in Mombasa waiting for container to arrive with truck. And recommendations?
I've been told Sentrim Royal Court a good option close by the port but it shows rates at 90 USD which is a bit steep. Also need a place to go immediately after collecting vehicle to shake it out prior to hitting the road. Any recommendations - if different from the first - on place close-ish by that would allow roof-top camping (or at least a decent place to park truck and work on it for a day or two)? Thanks, WR |
Yet again; dozens read, none respond ...

Or figure out that not everybody who views your post will have an answer. Hubbers are some of the friendliest and most helpful people on the net, bonded together by a shared love of travel. Be careful you don't alienate them before the one who has a good answer for you has time to respond...... Edited: " Posted 9 Hours Ago" - actually your coming across as an idiot if you think the hubb works that quick. Africa may teach you a few lessons about patience if your not careful.... |
An "idiot?" Really?
As a "veteran" on this site I'd expect better than to be called an idiot by you. My point was that, as my posting has, now, 109 views, it would be much more beneficial if at least one of those viewings was by someone who could actually provide an answer to my query, not just be from those having a look-see. That is what the point of posting a question on the board is, isn't it? To get a response?
I've covered 25 countries across Africa, and many, many more across 12 years of global travel and try and be of benefit to anyone who asks for my input, or to add it in on a question/query where I think it will benefit. I don't view any posting if I've nothing to input (but will on very popular threads for what has been provided, which benefits all) - and I would also never call anyone an idiot for what their individual requirements of the board were. Hi,
Looks as if you have jumped all the complicate parts of the east coast (Syria, Jordan, Ägypt and Sudan). From now on to Southafrica you will have beautifull landscape, tarmak (if you want) and it will not be a problem to get the needet visa (for Europeans and doesnt matter if you go through Mosambik or through Sambia, Botswana and Namibia). We went around mombasa and camped a few kilometers south at the Tivi Beach (GPS S04 ° 14'24 .1 "E039 ° 36'03 .8") wich was realy realy realy nice so may be its worth waiting there... Tiwi Beach
Thanks very much for your input. I have found three campsites listed for Tiwi Beach: Sand Island, Maweni and Capricho Beach Cottages. Did you stay at one of these? Or did you camp rough?
Cheers, WR |
Also as a 'Veteran" - in age as well as a few more years since 'joining' and more than 17 or so posts-
I have no idea of the motives of others who viewed the thread. I looked mainly out of general interest with the slight possibility of being able to help - based on your brief header. That gives nothing away nor if you are on moto, camper, lorry, jumbo jet or foot! I lived in Nairobi in the late 60s and frequently went to Mombasa and the nearby coast for long weekends, holidays etc. I went back there 6 or 7 years ago as part of a longer safari holiday. Not a single place I had previously stayed in was recognisable, other than some places had retained names. Equally where I recently stayed ( 'romantic' straw huts among the palm trees of a beach protected by the coral reef) is probably not what you need right now. So I did not venture to clutter the thread with details. Your apparant frustration or anger is unfair. People need to see if they can help you - if they can't they leave the thread. What's wrong with that? Have you bothered to Google 'Mombasa Hotels' or 'Mombasa Guest Houses'? From here in Russia I get pages and pages of them. If you have days to wait there and you don't like the first - move on and try another. Adventure travelling? Hmmm |
Hi,
I stayed at the Twiga Lodge Campsite GPS S04 ° 14'24 .1 "E039 ° 36'03 .8" because there i met a lot of other tourists. It was very interesding to talk to them and here there storys. Have fun, Tobi |
Brilliant; thanks Tobi, much appreciated.

Have a look here. At the time I'm posting it's the next thread down.

There is a campsite at Twiga lodge, Tiwi beach, which is southside of Mombasa over the ferry, and you can camp on the beach - They have rooms there also, but if you want a room then there is a better place a hundred metres down the beach - Coral Cove cottages.
There is also a cheap campsite and hotel nearer central Mombasa - Campers Haven and Jamboree, which is near the zoo and Nakumat a tad north of the docks - Tiwi beach is the best place though There is also a place near Watamu marine park North of Mombasa - Rock N'Sea campsite, on the road to Malindi which is well worth a visit if you are heading up towards Lamu - it's new so not on T4A yet, but you should be able to google it. I've spent getting on for a month around Mombasa, and Twiga Lodge campsite was way the best place to stay. Should be on tracks4africa. |
Woops sorry to have peeked.
Bill:oops2: |
Thanks EightPot, appreciate you details and the different options as I'll not have my vehicle (and ability to camp) til Monday but arrive Sat - gives me good options on how to cover off both.
Cheers, WR |
+1 for Twiga Lodge.
Definitely more preferable than staying in Mombasa. |
